Techies and crew, along with actress Cate Blanchett, star of "Notes on a Scandal" and "Babel" who is filming "Indiana Jones IV" on the Big Island through the weekend, gathered at the Emerald Orchid in Hilo Saturday night, staying for the music of Divina Maria Medeiros and the Hoku-winning Joe Battery Band, plus a post-show deejay. Nope, Harrison Ford wasn't among the party crowd. ...

ON THE MEND: Publicist Elissa Josephsohn has been battling cancer — and winning. She's had surgery at Cedars Sinai — Dr. Beth Karlan has been her angel — after several months of tests here.

"Miss my cats and all my loved ones," she e-mails from Los Angeles, where she now is recuperating under the watchful care of cousin Ann Hiatt and hubby Tom Hiatt of New York, who have an apartment on the West Coast. This, after post-surgery chemotherapy, then subsequent mending at the home of Josephsohn's longtime friends, Charlotte and Stanley Kandel.

Ex-locals Rex Nockengust and Gene Allen visited from San Diego; actor pal Richard Vida surprised her with a hospital visit as the New Yorker preps for a national tour of "The Drowsy Chaperone"; KSSK's Jamie Hartnett and ex-local Debbie Koerner, Josephsohn's sister, also shared aloha; and Rick Enos, her Compadres client, sent a teddy bear that comforts her.

Josephsohn — with a short 'do, in anticipation of hair loss — plans to be home by Aug. 1 to continue her recuperation. ...

AROUND TOWN: Michelle Jennings, Nellie Forbush in Hawaii Opera Theatre's "South Pacific" (opening tomorrow at Blaisdell Concert Hall), found herself side by side with Hawai'i's first Nellie, Lorraine Dove, at Kahala Nui's and HOT's "Great American Voices" dinner benefit at Kahala Nui. Dove originally did Nellie at Ruger Theatre and eventually toured military installations in the South Pacific — Guam, Kwajalein, plus Manila — in 1956. ...

Lots of action last weekend at Aaron's, when Taimane Gardener (the 'ukulele stylist and singer) opened up for Augie T Friday night and Fiji (the singer, who is a cousin of Aaron's Peter Maharaj), stopped by (along with Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom and Eric Gilliom) to jam with Swampa-ZZ, the Saturday night band. This, after the trio's appearance at Uncle's Fish Market's opening. Restaurateur Randy Schoch and wife Cherie (Ruth's Chris Steak House, Romano's Macaroni Grill) also dined Saturday with Aaron and Rhonda Placourakis in Aaron's Private Room. ...

SHORTS OF SORTS: Hapa members Nathan Aweau and Barry Flanagan and frequent collaborator Charles Ka'upu recently filmed a music profile for National Geographic at its Washington, D.C., studios that is destined for one or more NG editorial platforms this fall. Initial broadcasts of the show will be in Spain and Italy, then the Mainland. The segment features Hapa sharing five songs from its award-winning "Maui" CD in an unplugged, acoustic setting — nice! Ka'upu explains origins of chant and growing up on Moloka'i, Aweau reflects on his days as a high school teacher and musical directorship of the Don Ho shows, and Flanagan recounts New York basketball tales and his adoration of the Polynesian side of Island life. Next up: a Japan tour and a new CD tentatively titled "Hula." And: Hapa performs Saturday night at Chai's Island Bistro. ...
