Hilo's Kaha Wong will be a busy, well-traveled coach over the next couple of weeks.

He'll be taking two teams from different leagues to the Mainland for regionals.

Yesterday, one of Wong's Hilo teams completed a dominating run through the Little League Seniors (ages 14-16) State Tournament with a 16-6 victory over Pearl City at Halawa District Park.

The game ended after six innings because of the mercy rule.

Blake Amaral batted 3 for 4 with five RBIs, and Hilo scored five runs in the top of the fourth — all after two were out — and added seven more in the sixth.

Hilo, which finished 4-0 in the double-elimination tournament, scored at least 11 runs per game and outscored its opponents 60-16.

"If we hit like this, I don't think too many teams can really compete with us," Wong said. "We got some timely hitting, we got good hitting, good pitching."

Hilo will represent the state at the Seniors West Regional at Salem, Ore., July 29 to Aug. 7. The World Series is Aug. 12 to 18 at Bangor, Maine.

Earlier, Wong guided Hilo to the Cal Ripken (ages 12-younger) state championship. That team will travel to Rohnert Park, Calif., for the West Regional, which starts July 24.

There will be no scheduling conflict for Wong, whose Hilo team will be trying to retain its Cal Ripken World Series title. Last year, Hilo beat Mexico, 5-2, in the title game at Aberdeen, Md.

"Everything falls into place," Wong said of his schedule. "We leave in two days to go to the regionals for Cal Ripken. If we win or lose that one, the thing will be done before the season starts in Oregon (for the Hilo Seniors team)."

Pearl City led 5-4 after three innings yesterday, but Hilo sent nine batters to the plate in its five-run fourth.

The first two Hilo batters grounded out to second against starter David Lee, then Hilo strung together a single, two walks, two singles and a double.

The key hits were a three-run bloop single to right-center by Amaral and Keaka Pilayo's two-run double to left-center.

"The hitters have been doing their jobs. One little hit in the hole scored all three runs," Wong said of Amaral's hit. "When you have speed on the bases and two outs, everybody is going on the pitch."

Amaral, the second baseman and clean-up hitter, also had a two-run single in the first.

"If it wasn't for my teammates being on base it wouldn't have happened. So they did a wonderful job, too," Amaral said of his five-RBI game.

In the seven-run sixth, Hilo had five hits and benefitted from four errors.

Pilayo, Hilo's starter, struggled through three innings. But right-handed sidearmer Thad Yasuhara allowed just three hits and one run over the final three innings.

"I just pitch and keep the hitters off-balance," said Yasuhara, who batted 3 for 3 with three runs scored from the lead-off spot. He started at shortstop.

Pearl City, which lost to Hilo 11-1 on Saturday, needed to beat Hilo twice yesterday to win the state title.

Gary Nakamoto led Pearl City to runner-up finishes in the Seniors World Series the past two seasons.

"We ran across a good team," he said. "Take nothing away from Hilo. They hit the ball and they have good pitching. They have a good defense. Hat's off to them. They're going to do well up there. I'm sure they'll be up there."
