U.S. men's volleyball third in World League

The U.S. men's national volleyball team defeated Poland, 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, yesterday to place third in the FIVB World League at Katowice, Poland.
Brazil beat Russia, 18-25, 25-23, 28-26, 25-22, in the championship match to win its fifth straight World League title.
Reid Priddy scored 21 points to lead the U.S. over Poland. Reserve opposite Clay Stanley, a Kaiser High and University of Hawai'i alum, had one point.
Stanley scored five points on Saturday when the U.S. fell to Russia, 25-22, 17-25, 25-13, 25-21, in the semifinals. Priddy again led the team with 18 points on 16 kills and two blocks.
The Americans, who finished the World League with a 12-4 record, equaled their best showing since also placing third in 1992.

U.S. SEVENTH IN JUNIORS
The U.S. men's junior national team, captained by Hono-lulu's Kawika Shoji and Spencer McLachlin, defeated Cuba, 30-28, 20-25, 25-23, 25-20, yesterday to place seventh at the FIVB Men's Junior World Championship in Rabat, Morocco.
Brazil beat defending champion Russia, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19, in the gold-medal match.
Will Price led the U.S. over Cuba with 24 points on 22 kills and two aces. Shoji started at libero while McLachlin started at outside hitter and contributed four points.
CYCLING
SAWICKI PLACES SECOND
Mililani's Pua Sawicki finished second in the pro/open women's division at the USA Cycling National Marathon Mountain Bike Championship on July 4 at Breckenridge, Colo.
Sawicki completed the 50-mile race in 4 hours, 31 minutes, 2.3 seconds. Colorado's Shonny Vanlandingham won in 4:30:03.8.
Sawicki, who earned more than $5,000 for her runner-up finish, then won the CrankWorx Colorado race two days later. She finished eight minutes ahead of her nearest competitor.
Sawicki was named the Mountain Biker of the Year at the Everest Awards in June.
BASEBALL
14 KS NOT ENOUGH
Noah St. Urbain hit a two-run double as Kauai beat Waikiki, 2-1, yesterday to overcome a 14-strikeout performance by Kolby Nelson in a Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League game at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Nelson got his strikeouts in just seven innings. Geoff Nichols, who allowed Dan Bennick's RBI single in the fifth, went six innings for the victory. Chris Horner earned the save.
In other games, Errol Bailey had three hits as Waimea defeated Oahu, 8-4; and Nick Augustavo and Andy Mayer teamed to space eight hits as Hawaii beat Kamuela, 3-0.
FOOTBALL
CLINIC AT CASTLE
Castle High School will host an NFL Junior Player Development Clinic, July 23 through 27.
The free clinic, with full equipment provided, is open to youths ages 12 to 14.
Participants need to submit a current physical exam, parental permission and NFL waiver forms and a copy of their birth certificate to Castle by Friday. Equipment will be issued Saturday.

RUNNING
IACOVELLI, KING WIN
Todd Iacovelli won the Lanikai Bikepath 8K race yesterday, completing the course in 26 minutes, 31 seconds.
Emily King was the first female to finish the Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club event in 32:47.
