Waikiki, Oct. 7, Moloka'i Hoe canoe race. The Moloka'i Hoe Outrigger Canoe Championship, regarded as the men's world championship of long-distance outrigger canoe racing, ends with festivities and excitement shortly after midday at Duke Kahanamoku Beach in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. www.ohcra.com.

CALIFORNIA

FLORIDA

Key West, Oct. 19-28, Fantasy Fest. Themed "Gnomes, Toads and White Rabbit Tea Parties," this campy multi-day, multi-event metrosexual celebration includes a costume parade sponsored by Captain Morgan rum, a headress ball, a street fair, a pet masquerade (featuring cross-dressing animals and their look-alike owners), a fancy dress party, a toga party and more. www.fantasyfest.net.

CANADA

Stratford, Ontario, Now to November, Stratford Festival of Canada. The 55th annual theatrical festival ranges from Shakespeare to Oscar Wilde, "Oklahoma" to "To Kill a Mockingbird," plus lectures, tours and family/children's events. www.stratford-festival.on.ca.

Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, Now - Oct. 27, Shaw Festival. Ten plays in overlapping runs in three theaters make up this annual theatrical festival that celebrates the works of George Bernard Shaw but includes plays of other masters. www.shawfest.com.

Belem, Brazil, October, Cirio de Nazare. The largest annual festival on the Amazon combines religious fervor (processions and parades honoring the Virgin Mary, with costumed participants, people jostling to carry the stand on which the effigy is placed and so on) plus music and food. www.ciriodenazare.com.br/.

GREAT BRITAIN

Halton, Aug. 25, Creamfields. Held at Daresbury Estate, Halton, Cheshire, the lineup for this rock festival this year includes Chemical Brothers, Groove Armada, Kelis and more playing live, plus masses of DJs. www.creamfields2007.co.uk/.

London, Aug. 31-Sept. 2, Notting Hill Carnival. In the historical neighborhood made famous in America by the Julia Roberts-Hugh Grant film, Caribbean immigrants imported the Carnival tradition in the 1960s, and it's been going strong ever since, with a masquerade parade, steel-band competition and music from calypso to samba, said to be Europe's largest street festival. www.londoncarnival.co.uk.

CAMBODIA

Phnom Penh, November, Festival of the Reversing Current (Bon Om Tuk). Three days of boat races mark the annual natural phenomenon in which the Tonle Sap River switches direction each year, around the time of the full moon in November. JULY-AUG.

TANGLE WITH TANGLEWOOD

If you have occasion to be in Massachusetts in the next couple of weeks, or if you're contemplating a trip to Boston next summer, one of America's best-loved musical traditions is the Tanglewood Summer Music Festival, which is taking place now through early August. This year, Mark Elder, Hans Graf and Jens Georg Bachmann conduct the three concerts over the Beethoven weekend, July 20-22, along with soprano Christine Brewer, pianists Imogen Cooper and Leon Fleisher, the Beaux Arts Trio and violinist Daniel Hope. Kurt Masur conducts two concerts of Prokofiev, Beethoven and Mozart July 27 and 29, as does Edo de Waart (Dvorák, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninov and a world premiere by De Raaf on Aug. 4 and 5), while Spanish conductor Rafael Frubeck de Burgos arrives in the final week for three concerts, ending the festival with a performance of Beethoven's Choral Symphony. THE WONDER

Kökeçe Natural History Museum hosts “Wonder Walk” hikes throughout the summer, with trained volunteer interpreters as guides. Dates of upcoming hikes are July 21, 22, 28 and 29; Aug. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26; Sept. 2 and 9. Destinations vary. Most hikes commence at 12:15 and return by 4 p.m., but a few sites are explored in the morning. Bring light rain gear, water, sunscreen and protective clothing and wear hiking boots. Food is not provided and space is limited, so reservations are required.
