Rainbows' Sanchez named WAC hitter of the week

Hawai'i first baseman Kris Sanchez has been named the Western Athletic Conference baseball hitter of the week, the conference announced Monday.
Sanchez, a senior from Tucson, Ariz., was 7 for 11 (.636) in three games for the Rainbows last week. In the season opener against Santa Clara on Friday, he batted 3 for 4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs. On Sunday, he was 3 for 5 with another double. For the week, he had three doubles, scored three runs, drove in three and was walked three times. It is Sanchez's first career WAC hitter of the week award.
The WAC pitcher of the week was Nevada righthander Mario Rivera. The other pitcher of the week nomination was senior Ian Harrington of Hawai'i.
The Rainbows host a three-game series against Georgia Southern, Thursday to Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.
SOFTBALL
UH-HILO TAKE ON ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO
The Hawai'i-Hilo softball team opens its season Friday and Saturday against Arkansas-Monticello at UHH Softball Field.
Friday's game begins at noon and Saturday's at 11 a.m.
The Vulcans have gone to the NCAA Division II West Regional the past two years.
UH-Hilo will play 56 games this season, including home doubleheaders against Pacific West Conference opponents Grand Canyon (March 3-4), Notre Dame deNamur (March 9-10), Brigham Young-Hawai'i (April 6-7), Dixie State (April 17-18), Chaminade (April 21-22) and Hawai'i Pacific (April 28-29).
The Vulcans are coached by Callen Perreira, who will begin his 18th season.
Returning players include seniors Haunani Haasenritter, Zoie Sevilla and Chelsea Osborne in the outfield, junior Charity Senas at shortstop, senior Vanessa Badosa at second base and junior Meghan Jost at first base.
Senior Leo Sing Chow and sophomore Sarah Weisskopf are returnees on the pitching staff.
NCAA DIVISION II
PACWEST CONFERENCE RELAUNCHES WEB SITE
The Pacific West Conference, which includes Hawai'i's four Division II athletic programs, has relaunched its Web site to include information from its member schools.
The site can be reached at www.pacificwestsports.org.
The conference said the site will include up-to-date information, including campus news, players of the week and statistics.
The PacWest members are Brigham Young-Hawai'i, Chaminade, Dixie State (Utah), Grand Caynon (Ariz.), Hawai'i Pacific, Notre Dame de Namur (Calif.) and Hawai'i-Hilo.
BOXING
USA-BOXING HAWAI'I CHAMPIONSHIPS SET
The USA-Boxing Hawai'i State/Regional Championships will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 and 17 at Palolo gym.
Defending champions expected to compete are: Kawika Tangjian Jr. (119 pounds), Amedeo Ezzo-White Jr. (125) and two-time champion Filipo Toelau (178) of Kawano's Boxing Club, and two-time champ Isaac Arasato (132) of Palolo.
Winners advance to the U.S. Championships at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., in June.
Quarterfinalists of this year's U.S. Championships will make the Olympic Trials and boxoff in August to determine the 2008 Olympic Team.
Admission for the Hawai'i championships is $10.
BASKETBALL
ROOSEVELT-CASTLE RESCHEDULED FOR TODAY
The O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East Division game between Roosevelt and Castle was postponed because of a power outage Monday at Castle gym.
The game was rescheduled for Tuesday following a 5 p.m. junior varsity contest between the two schools.
