A 44-year-old Big Island man involved in a one-car crash on Jan. 2 in Leilani Estates has died, police said.
David B. McDaniel, of Kalapana, died Friday at The Queen's Medical Center. Police said McDaniel was in the backseat of a 1987 Subaru station wagon when it lost control in Leilani Estates and went into a ditch about 6:57 p.m. on Jan. 2. The 45-year-old driver, a Pahoa woman, was uninjured.
Police said the driver lost control after her right front tire became loose. It is unknown if speed or alcohol were factors.

MAUI WILDFIRE CONTINUES TO BURN
Firefighters continued to battle a Maui wildfire Saturday on the upper slopes of Haleakala that had burned at least 600 acres.
The flames were burning densely packed pine, eucalyptus, and native forest trees in the Polipoli Forest Reserve at elevations between 6,000 feet and 7,000 feet.
More than 45 people were fighting the fire, including reinforcements from O'ahu, Kaua'i and the Big Island, said county information officer Mahina Martin. Firefighters had doused 60 percent of the fire at one point, but they lost some ground amid low humidity, high temperatures and stronger wind and still only had about 30 percent of the fire contained Saturday.
The fire was reported Tuesday in the pine forest at the trailhead to the Waiohuli Trail. It expanded up the slopes above the access road to the forest reserve.
