Dung's late 3 propels 'Iolani over Warriors

The 'Iolani boys basketball team was down by two points with less than 10 seconds remaining Friday night against Kamehameha.

Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi wanted to go for the tie, but the Warriors had it well defended.

Kamehameha, however, had no defense for Ryan Dung, who hit a 3-pointer from the left baseline with 1.6 seconds remaining to lift visiting 'Iolani to a 42-41 victory.

"We were just trying to get two points, tie the game and take it into overtime," said Dung, who scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth period. "I saw Kela (Marciel) going for it, but he got stuck, so I just tried to get in his vision."

'Iolani, the five-time defending state champion, remained tied atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings with Punahou at 6-1. Kamehameha dropped to 3-4.

On the play, Marciel took an inbounds pass after a made Kamehameha free throw with 9.9 seconds remaining, but the clock didn't start until he passed half court.

He dribbled along the baseline from the right side and his pass was deflected by a Kamehameha player, but reached Dung, who hit three 3-pointers in the final period.

"I thought I had a good look, and that was the best look we were going to get at the end of the game. I stroked it and it went in for me," Dung said.

It was the Raiders' first lead since 2-0, just 22 seconds into the game.

"No one on this team wants to lose," Dung said. "We always felt we have that bull's-eye on our back. And we rose to the occasion."

After Dung's shot went in, the officials stopped play to sort out the time situation.

The officials put 1.6 seconds on the clock, and the Warriors' long heave was intercepted by 'Iolani's Liloa Nobriga, who appeared to walk toward the Raiders' bench before the buzzer sounded. But the officials signaled the end of the game.

Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi declined comment on the timing issue.

'Iolani trailed by 12 late in the first half, and 33-25 after three periods.

The Raiders, who employed a half-court trap the final three periods, finally got to the Warriors in the fourth quarter.

'Iolani forced seven turnovers in the fourth, and Kamehameha only hit 2 of 5 field-goal attempts. The Raiders were 6 of 12 in the period.

"We hit some big shots and we played great 'D' and forced some turnovers. Otherwise, Kamehameha had an excellent game plan," 'Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said.

Neither team shot well from the free-throw line. 'Iolani was 3 of 12, including 2 of 9 in the fourth period. The Warriors were 6 of 14.

"We missed all our free throws down the stretch and it almost cost us the game. That was really bad," Mugiishi said.

Kamehameha's Rykin Enos, who scored 16 points in the first half, had two in the second.

Kamehameha really slowed things down in the second half, attempting only 15 shots.

"I could have done stuff differently," Nakanishi said. "We tried to take a page out of their book and take some time off the clock. We should have been in more of an attack mode."
