The famous Maytag repairman is on the way back into the spotlight, as soon as someone decides who he is.
Whirlpool is launching a nationwide search for someone to portray the famous advertising character. It could be a professional actor, an ordinary guy next door, or even a real-life appliance repairman, Whirlpool says.
The search will include casting calls for union actors and calls open to the public in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.
Whirlpool says finding a new repairman is part of plans to revitalize the Maytag brand, acquired by Whirlpool in 2006.
Actor Hardy Rawls was hired by the Newton, Iowa-based company in 2003 to play the character. His contract expires in March and won't be renewed.
The character first appeared on American TV screens in 1967 during NBC's "The Today Show."
These actors have portrayed the Maytag repairman since its creation: Jesse White, who retired in 1988 after playing the part for 21 years; Gordon Jump, who retired in 2003 after 15 years; and Rawls.
The new repairman will make publicity appearances and appear on TV commercials for Maytag products.
The new repairman will be unveiled at the end of March.
Whirlpool says people can visit the www.nextmaytagrepairman.com Web site after Monday for updated information on the search, including specific locations, times, casting specs and eligibility for those interested in auditioning. The Web site will also include video clips of the various contestants during the audition process.
