TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE
"Friends of God: A Road Trip With Alexandra Pelosi," 7 p.m., HBO. There are really two stories here, opposite in tone. The first half is a sweet-spirited look at evangelical Christians. Ranging from Christian wrestlers to a Bible-themed miniature-golf course, it catches amiable people who have lives that work. Alexandra Pelosi (the daughter of Democrat Nancy Pelosi, the new speaker of the House) is far from the religious right. She is, however, someone who draws out the best in people. Her "Journeys With George" put a pleasant face on George W. Bush. Here, she finds a sweet spirit in the evangelicals. The second half, however, changes tone. That's when people go beyond their own lives and want to regulate others'. A well-made road trip takes us on dark detours.
OF NOTE
"Ugly Betty," 7 p.m., ABC. Betty finds herself with a new crush — and with an awful Halloween costume. Meanwhile, Daniel visits his mom (Judith Light).
"My Name is Earl," 7 p.m., NBC. Launching an NBC night of comedy reruns, Earl feels bad because he once stole a cat in order to give Joy a shot at winning a competition. Now the cat — no longer a winner — must be returned. Along the way, Randy finds love.
"The Office," 7:30, 9 and 9:30 p.m., NBC. In the first rerun, Angela nudges Dwight to go after Michael's job. In the second, Michael scrambles for a way for the office to mourn the death of the man who previously had his job. In the third, Dwight takes Ryan out on his first sales calls — and makes an odd side trip.
"Grey's Anatomy," 8 p.m., ABC. Bailey keeps showing signs that she has a heart. Now she wants to set up a free clinic. Meanwhile, the hospital buzzes with rumors that the chief is quitting.
"Scrubs," 8 p.m., NBC. Here's a rerun of the season-opener, which obsesses on babies. Carla and Turk await their first. Dr. Cox awaits his second. And J.D. is adjusting to the news from someone (Elizabeth Banks) he dated briefly, that they will be parents.
"30 Rock," 8:30 p.m., NBC. Here's a good example of why Alec Baldwin has just won a Golden Globe for best supporting comedy actor. There are some great moments as he lectures his people on product placement and then is asked to appear in a sketch.
"Shark," 9 p.m., CBS. An ambitious assistant district attorney has been killed in the car of a top-dollar prostitute. Is this a scandal, or was he working on an investigation?
"Men in Trees," 9 p.m., ABC. Marin moves into her house — even though it's really not ready to be lived in.
