Tourist to keep $3,500 she found

An honest tourist who found $3,500 and turned it in to police will get to keep the money, police announced.
The 73-year-old Australian woman found the cash in a Kona parking lot on July 29 and reported the find to police later that day.
Under police policy, if found money remains unclaimed for 45 days, the finder is entitled to keep the cash as long as police find no evidence it is connected to a crime.
No one claimed the money, so the Australian woman made arrangements for police to send a check for $3,500 to a friend of hers on the Big Island. The friend will forward the money to the Australian woman, police said.
Both women asked that police not reveal their names.
"It was a pleasure to reward this honest individual," said police Lt. Randal Ishii.

SEVEN INJURED IN BUS-TRUCK CRASH
Seven people were injured in a collision yesterday between a city bus and pickup truck at Middle and North King streets.
Emergency Medical Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said none of the people transported to three different hospitals from the 3:47 p.m. collision appears to have life-threatening injuries.
A man driving the truck was in serious condition at The Queen's Medical Center. Six people from the bus, including the driver, were taken to Kapi'olani Medical Center at Pali Momi and Kuakini hospitals in stable condition for observation, Cheplic said.

H-3 LANE WILL BE CLOSED FOR PAVING
Pavement work on the H-3 Freeway in Kane'ohe involves lane closures through Friday.
The Department of Transportation is closing one lane for resurfacing between the Halekou Interchange and the Marine Corps Base Hawai'i through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Mokapu Boulevard off-ramp will be closed for resurfacing today and tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

CHINESE SHIP IN PORT FOR REPAIRS
A 485-foot Chinese-flagged cargo ship was granted permission yesterday to enter the port of Honolulu for repair work on a cracked hull below the waterline.
Members of the Coast Guard's Salvage Engineering Response Team and Navy's Mobile Diving Salvage Unit One assessed the vessel's structural integrity before it was allowed into port.
MAN, BOY HELD IN STOLEN-CAR CRASH
Police yesterday arrested a 20-year-old man and a juvenile boy who were allegedly in a stolen car involved in an early morning crash on the H-1 Freeway near the Pali Highway exit from the westbound lane.
Police Capt. Robert Green said a patrol officer attempted to pull over a speeding black Acura, which was later determined to be stolen, on Punahou Street at 4 a.m.
The officer lost sight of the car but the Acura crashed into a retaining wall while trying to exit the freeway at Pali Highway a short time later. No injuries were reported.

TWO CHARGED IN COCKFIGHT RAID
Police Narcotics/Vice Division officers raided two cockfight gambling locations Sunday in Ma'ili.
Two men were charged after a 3:45 p.m. raid on the 87-1600 block of Pa'akea Road.
Allan D. Atchazo, 40, of Waipahu and Bernard Quiambao, 48, of Pacific Palisades were each charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals and possession of prohibited gaff, a petty misdemeanor.
Police Maj. Kevin Lima said no arrests were made at the second location.
