LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A 51-year-old Alaska man was killed and three other people injured yesterday in a collision between a rental car and a tour bus on Kuhio Highway at Hanama'ulu.
Two other people in the rental car, a 50-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, were treated at Wilcox Hospital and released. Both are from Alaska.
The driver of the Polynesian Adventures bus, a 60-year-old 'Oma'o man, was also treated at Wilcox Hospital and released. No one else was in the bus.
The accident happened at 4:15 p.m. and closed the highway at the Kapule Highway junction for traffic in both directions for an hour. Two-way traffic was restored about 6:30 p.m.
Police said both vehicles were traveling north when the car tried to make a U-turn in front of the bus. The bus broadsided the car and pushed it across the highway and onto the shoulder.
