WAIPI'O — Lama Tito had two RBIs to spark a four-run third inning and Saleia Mata'afa and Shawntei Cabe teamed on a four-hitter last night to lead Kahuku to a 4-2 win over Farrington for the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference softball crown.

It is the first title for the Red Raiders, who will receive the OIA's No. 1 seed and first-round bye in the DII state tourney.

"Our school is known more for football and volleyball, not softball," said Kahuku coach Anue Santiago. "Hopefully, winning this will encourage more girls to come out for softball."

Santiago said until two years ago, there was no youth softball program on the North Shore to develop players, and only three of the current Red Raiders had previous softball experience before joining the high school team.

"The rest of the players all play two or more sports, usually either volleyball and basketball," Santiago said. "We're real young, too."

Kahuku, Farrington, McKinley and Kaiser will represent the OIA in the Division II state tournament, starting Jan. 31 at CORP.
