Twenty youths from First United Methodist Church of Honolulu will be participating in the World Vision's annual 30 Hour Famine beginning Friday.

Youths in grades seven through 12 are seeking donations as they go 30 hours without food in an effort to better understand life in developing countries. They will take part in games and devotions and even serve meals to those living on the beach in Wai'anae. The group's goal is to raise enough money to feed three children for a year.

FOLK-ROCK DUO TO GIVE FREE CONCERT

Tangled Blue will perform a free concert at 3 p.m. Jan. 27 at Calvary-By-The-Sea Lutheran Church.

Tangled Blue, a husband-and-wife folk-rock group from Houston, will be performing for the first time in the Islands, where they also will play on Kaua'i. After both performances will be a free dinner and talk-story time.

The concert is sponsored by the Hukilau conference of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

DINNER TO HONOR RETIRING BISHOP

After 11 years as bishop and more than 40 years as a minister, Honpa Hongwanji's Bishop Chikai Yosemori will retire Feb. 27.

As the 14th bishop of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawai'i, Yosemori has overseen 36 temples and more than 8,000 members, as well as the Buddhist Study Center.

The Honpa Hongwanji will hold an aloha banquet at 5:30 p.m. March 1 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom in his honor; tickets are $60.

CHAMINADE TO HOST PEACE EVENT

Chaminade University has inaugurated its David W. Chappell Peace Program with a free event, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 3, at the Ching Conference Center, second floor of Eiben Hall at Chaminade University, 3140 Wai'alae Ave.

Winning student essays on the topic of "Creating Peace Across Boundaries" will be available, and guest lecturer Ruben L.F. Habito will speak on "Linking Inner Peace and Global Peace: Perspectives in Buddhist-Christian Dialogue." Habito is a professor of world religions and spirituality and current associate dean for academic affairs at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University.

A responding panel includes Roger Ames, University of Hawai'i-Manoa; Pierre Asselin, Chaminade University; and Tracey Wiltgen of the Mediation Center of the Pacific.

An author, scholar and educator on the history of Buddhism, Chappell died in December 2004. He was the founding editor of the academic journal Buddhist-Christian Studies.

BRITT LECTURE PRESENTED FREE

The 28th Annual Britt Lecture will be the free talk, "Lord, to Whom Can We Go," presented by John B. Cobb at 7 p.m. Feb. 16-18 at First United Methodist Church of Honolulu, 1020 S. Beretania St.

Cobb, an emeritus professor of Claremont School of Theology and Claremont Graduate School, wrote "The Call of the Spirit: Process Spirituality in a Relational World."
