KAILUA — Januari Santiago's sacrifice fly brought home Jarrish Mauhili-Kaneakua with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning and Krista Dumandan tossed a five-hitter yesterday to lead Kailua to a 1-0 playoff victory over Kapolei.
The defending O'ahu Interscholastic Association softball champion Surfriders, who improved to 10-3, will play Campbell (12-1) at 5 p.m. in today's league semifinals at Central O'ahu Regional Park. Mililani (11-3) will face Moanalua (12-1) in the other semifinal at 7.
All four semifinalists clinched berths in the upcoming state tournament with yesterday's victories.
"We really wanted this game," said Dumandan, a junior right-hander who finished with three strikeouts and no walks. "We've been in a hitting slump, but we had to pull together. We wanted to make it to states, because winning states is our goal."
Kapolei, which won OIA championship in 2004 and 2005, presented a tough quarterfinal challenge yesterday. The Hurricanes had been scoring a lot of runs in the past couple weeks, including a 10-0 first-round win over Kalani on Wednesday.
But after getting two runners aboard in the top of the first inning, the Hurricanes (9-5) reached base only three more times — once each in the second, fifth and seventh innings. Ashlynn Ashby was 60 feet from tying it with two outs in the seventh, but Dumandan got a flyout to left field to end the game.
"I was really scared, pretty nervous," Dumandan said. "But I believe in my team, and I knew they would back me up."
The Surfriders played errorless defense, while Kapolei committed three errors. The Hurricanes also had a costly wild pitch, which advanced Mauhili-Kaneakua to second base after she led off the fourth with a bloop single to right.
Mauhili-Kaneakua then took third base on Netia Ulugaono's sacrifice bunt and beat the throw home after Santiago's sacrifice fly to center.
"They executed, and we didn't execute," Kapolei coach Tony Saffery said.
Ashby led off the seventh with an infield single and advanced to second on Alyssa Dumlao's sacrifice bunt and to third on another sacrifice by Alysha Holt-Santiago. But Dumandan got a quick 1-2 count on the next batter with two floating risers before inducing the game-ending flyout to left.
"Her riser is kind of off-speed, and we knew (the last batter) would be anxious," Kailua coach Bernard Victor said. "But this was anybody's game. It was just who's ball fell into place at the right time."
