Advertiser Staff
The search has been called off for missing surfer Joaquin Velilla, 35, who was reported missing at 10:50 p.m. Thursday.
During the three-day search, HFD employed its helicopter, and personnel from its Sunset Beach and Rescue 2 units, according to spokesman Capt. Frank Johnson. The Fire Department called off the search at about 5 p.m. yesterday.
The Coast Guard and North Shore lifeguards also participated in the search.
Johnson said divers were in the water but were unable to search underwater ledges and caves because of the high-surf conditions.
Velilla, an experienced surfer, left his Hale'iwa home Thursday at 5 p.m. to go surfing at 'Ehukai Beach. His vehicle was at the beach park. An unidentified person found his board Thursday night and turned it in to HFD personnel on Friday.
