Tomorrow is the reservations deadline for a forum on the proposed O'ahu fixed guideway system, sponsored by the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Honolulu Board of Realtors. The past five years' unparalleled growth in research at the University of Hawai'i — with expected expansion — will be discussed at a meeting Jan. 25 of the HAWAI'I SOCIETY OF CORPORATE PLANNERS. University research and training grants and contracts totaled nearly $400 million in the most recent reporting period, according to the society, with a National Science Foundation ranking of No. 25 nationwide among public university research expenditures. Speaking will be Gary K. Ostrander, UH-Manoa vice chancellor for research and graduate education. Also participating will be Rolf-Peter Kudritzki, director of the UH Institute for Astronomy, which oversees Big Island and Maui observatories; and Peter Crouch, new UH College of Engineering dean. The head of the anti-smoking advocacy group Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawai'i, which worked for passage of the recent statewide ban on smoking in workplaces and enclosed public areas such as bars and restaurants, will outline how the group organized and successfully pushed forward its plans. The presentation, "Starting Something," will feature Jeff Kleck, chief executive officer and chairman of Attainia Inc.; and Wayne McVicker, company co-founder, president and board member, and award-winning author of the book "Starting Something."
