Saint Louis tops 'Iolani, 51-48

Saint Louis earned its first boys basketball victory over 'Iolani in seven seasons last night, 51-48, before a vocal home crowd of about 600 at McCabe Gym.
The Crusaders, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 3-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. The six-time defending ILH champion Raiders, ranked No. 2, fell to 2-1.
It was Saint Louis' first victory over 'Iolani since Feb. 3, 2001. After that loss, the Raiders began a 61-game league winning streak that did not end until last January.
"'Iolani is a great team," said Saint Louis senior guard Kuli'a Aiona, who finished with a team-high 15 points last night. "Ever since I was in eighth grade, we hadn't beaten them, and we had to wait (for three years on) varsity to have this win."
To do it, Saint Louis rallied to tie the score at 25-25 by halftime and then took control midway through the fourth period.
Ricksson Pacarro's 3-pointer with 6:27 remaining tied it again at 38-38 and started a 13-2 run that ended with Cole Shidaki's three-point play to put the Crusaders up, 49-40, with 2:51 left.
Liloa Nobriga's layup with 32 seconds remaining cut it to 51-47 and the Raiders got a backcourt steal on the ensuing possession, but they were called for a charge with 14 seconds left.
After Saint Louis missed the front end of a one-and-one, 'Iolani's Ryan Dung made the first of two free throws with 2.8 ticks remaining to make it 51-48. He then missed the second one on purpose, but the Crusaders' Scott Smith grabbed the rebound and ran out the clock.
"It was crucial for us to get that lead," Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan said. "We didn't want to be behind and have them go to the delay game."
The Raiders made six 3-pointers in the first half and built a 21-14 lead, but Aiona scored seven straight points for Saint Louis and Micah McClinton's layup tied it at 25-25 with 47 seconds left in the half.
'Iolani made only one 3-pointer in the second half.
"Saint Louis is tough and physical, and we kind of lost our legs in the second half," Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said. "They also hurt us bad on the boards."
Smith added nine points, seven rebounds, five steals and a block for the Crusaders. Case Miyahira led 'Iolani with 15 points and Dung added 14.
