'Bows strike gold on track

University of Hawai'i junior Annett Wichmann captured the pentathlon and Rainbow Wahine senior Novelle Murray won the weight throw in the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships yesterday at Nampa, Idaho.
Wichmann won the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 5 1/2 inches and finished with 3,830 points in the five-event discipline that also includes the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump and 800-meter run.
Cal State Northridge's Lashana Verdon was second with 3,783 points. UH senior Mallory Gilbert placed sixth with a personal-best 3,456 points.
Murray threw the weight 63 feet, 3 1/4 inches to easily beat runner-up Eleni Ypsilanti of Boise State, who recorded a throw of 60-11 1/4.
Cal State Northridge edge last year's champion, Louisiana Tech, by 2.5 points, 117.5-114, to win the team title. Hawai'i moved up one spot from last year to finish sixth with 53.5 points.

RAINBOWS SPLIT
Vanessa Lindsey scored in overtime as No. 5 California edged No. 4 Hawai'i, 5-4, last night in the UC Irvine Invitational at Irvine, Calif.
Angela Turnbull scored three goals for the Rainbow Wahine (8-5).
Earlier in the day, Kelly Mason scored five goals and goalie Meike De Nooy made 13 saves as Hawai'i held off No. 12 UC Santa Barbara, 9-7.
SOFTBALL
HPU SWEEPS BYUH
Lehua Yap hit a two-run homer and a three-run shot as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 17-7, yesterday to complete a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader at the BYUH field.
Nicole Kalakau added three hits and two RBIs, and Danielle Young had a two-run triple and solo homer for the Sea Warriors (7-1).
Rachelle Wade hit a grand slam for the Seasiders (5-5).
In the first game, Sherise Musquiz scattered 10 hits and struck out five, and Yap had four hits, and Casey Sugihara and Krystal Plunkett each had three hits in HPU's 4-2 win.
Crystal De La Cruz had two hits and two RBIs for BYUH.
HILO TOPS CHAMINADE
Charity Senas had three hits, including a solo homer, and three RBIs and Sarah Weisskopf pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Chaminade, 7-0, last night to complete a sweep of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Chelsea Osborne also had three hits for the Vulcans (12-2, 2-0 PacWest).
Valerie De Los Santo had two hits for the Silverswords (0-7, 0-2).
In the first game, Leo Sing Chow had three hits and two RBIs, Miki Asamura had two hits and three RBIs, and Tracy Ryan pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Hilo to a 17-0 victory in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.
Keli-Grace Saniatan singled with two outs in the fifth for the lone hit for the Silverswords.
GOLF
CALIP, MULLEN IN LEAD
Amateur Pono Calip and professional Jerry Mullen each shot a 4-under-par 67 yesterday to share the first-round lead of the 10th Hilo Invitational at Hilo Muni.
Pros David Gerken, Joe Phengsavath and defending champion Jarett Hamamoto are tied for third with 68s.
The final round tees off at 8 a.m. today.
