Historical park doubles in size

Advertiser Staff

The National Park Service and The Trust for Public Land today are celebrating a $4.6 million land purchase that doubles the size of Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park to 420 acres.

The 238-acre addition of lands in the Ki'ilae Ahupua'a includes more than 1,000 archaeological sites and adds more coastline to the park.

The park, also known as the City of Refuge, features a sacred compound that was a safe haven for those who broke the kapu system under traditional native Hawaiian law and sought clemency.

The dedication is at 10 a.m. at the park and will be followed by ranger-led interpretive hikes.
