Moanalua was down by 10 with under a minute to play last night against Radford, and "psychologically beaten," according to Na Menehune coach Greg Tacon.

It wasn't looking like Moanalua was going to come back and win the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division I State Championships first-round game at McKinley High.

But Na Menehune scored the final 10 points over the final 38 seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime, and Stevie Austin hit the game-winning layup with 6 seconds remaining to lift Moanalua to an incredible 73-71 victory.

"When things like that happen a lot of crazy things have to take place," Tacon said. "We were psychologically beaten, but for some reason we hung around. That's been the story of our season, we hung around."

Moanalua had the ball with 1:15 remaining in overtime and the score tied at 71. Na Menehune played keep away and used their final timeout with 19 seconds left.

Austin, a 5-foot-10 junior guard, took a pass near half court, things opened up for him and he hit the layup to put Moanalua ahead.

"When I got it we had eight seconds left and I took it to the hole to get fouled or just score," Austin said.

Radford's Gary Satterwhite missed a 35-footer at the buzzer, which sent Na Menehune and their fans into a frenzy.

Austin scored 24 points and Josh Kure added 20 for Moanalua (12-5).

Moanalua, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's No. 5 team, will face top-seeded Punahou tonight at 8 in the quarterfinals.

It sets up an intriguing matchup between two coaches who switched places at the end of last season.

Tacon coached Punahou last season, while Dan Hale was coaching Moanalua.

"It's going to be a strange game for me mentally because I care for the kids on that team so much and I care for my kids so much," Tacon said. "We're just going to handle it."

Radford's So'oso'o Taulelei made a basket to put the Rams up for the first time at 50-48 with 5:50 left in the game.

There would be four lead changes over the next 2:30, before Radford went on a 13-2 run to take a 63-53 lead with 1:05 left. Travis Daniels scored five points during the surge.

It was 65-55 with 49 seconds remaining after two free throws by Radford's Justin Lord.

Austin got Moanalua started on the comeback with a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left, Casey Schuler hit two free throws, and Jay Yoshizawa completed a three-point play with 8 seconds left to make it 65-63.

Taulelei went to the line for Radford (11-6) with 7 seconds left, but missed both attempts.

Austin dribbled up the floor and was fouled in the backcourt with 4 seconds left. It was the seventh team foul on the Rams, so Austin went to the line and hit two free throws to tie it at 65.

Radford, the OIA's No. 3 team, held a 41-19 rebounding edge, but committed 19 turnovers.
