University of Hawai'i senior forward Pam Tambini was named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for helping the Rainbow Wahine to a pair of victories, the conference office announced yesterday.

Tambini averaged 17 points and six rebounds per game in UH's wins over Fresno State and Utah State. She also averaged two assists and two steals per game as Hawai'i stretched its season-best win streak to six games.

It was the first time Tambini had been honored by the conference.

The Rainbow Wahine (13-12, 7-6) will close out their home schedule against San Jose State (3-24, 2-11) Saturday. They complete WAC play March 1 at Idaho and March 3 at Boise State.

Tambini and four fellow senior — Cassidy Chretien, Brittany Grice, Amber Lee and Janevia Taylor — will be honored as part of the Senior Night festivities, following the conclusion of Saturday's game.

SOFTBALL

UH'S ROBINSON HURLS GEM, HITS TWO HOMERS

Kate Robinson pitched a one-hitter, hit two home runs and drove in six runs in a 16-0 rout of Southern Utah yesterday on the final day of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

The Rainbow Wahine (10-2) went 5-1, finishing third in the 24-team tournament. They play a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount tomorrow in Los Angeles.

Robinson (2-0) retired the first nine batters. The only hit she allowed was a lead-off single in the fifth, the final inning in a game abbreviated because of the mercy rule.

This was Robinson's second two-homer game of the tournament. In addition to her two two-run homers, she hit a two-run double.

UH coach Bob Coolen said Robinson benefits from her new position in the lineup — fifth, behind Tyleen Tausaga. "Her hitting is coming around," Coolen said.

UH used 17 players.

HPU WINS PAIR AGAINST CHAMINADE, 11-2, 9-1

Krystal Plunkett batted 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, and Courtney Kessell tossed a five-hitter as Hawai'i Pacific beat Chaminade, 9-1, yesterday to complete a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Kessell allowed one run with four walks and struck out eight in five innings for the Sea Warriors (5-1). Brandi Sasaki hit a solo home run for the Silverswords (0-5).

Clerisse Lemke fired a three-hitter and the Sea Warriors pounded 14 hits to beat the Silverswords, 11-2, in the first game.

Kara Wedemeyer, Jessica Adolf and Puna Waiolama each drove in two runs for HPU. Lemke allowed two runs, one unearned, four walks and struck out one in five innings.

TRACK AND FIELD

MURRAY SETS FIELD RECORD IN WEIGHT TOSS

University of Hawai'i senior Novelle Murray recorded a 60-foot, 4 1/2-inch throw in the weight toss Saturday to break the Cooke Field record at the Terry Albritton Invitational.

Murray, who held the previous Cooke Field best of 58-7 1/4, set the school record with an NCAA provisional mark of 64-1 3/4 earlier this season.

Murray, who is from Surrey, British Columbia, is the defending Western Athletic Conference champion in the weight toss.

A number of UH athletes competed in the Albritton Invitational, which is named after the late UH athlete who set the world shot put record in an all-comers meet at UH in 1976.

The Rainbow Wahine will leave this week for Boise, Idaho, site of the WAC Indoor Championship.

Boise State will host the event Friday and Saturday at Jackson's Track at the Idaho Sports Center in Nampa, Idaho.
