Mackey leads UH swimmers to second in WAC

Nicole Mackey, a University of Hawai'i senior, won the 200-yard backstroke in an NCAA meet automatic qualifying time yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas.

Mackey, who won in 1 minute, 57.72 seconds, was named WAC Swimmer of the Year for the third consecutive year.

Six victories in seven events by Hawai'i swimmers yesterday weren't enough to prevent Nevada from winning its first conference swimming title.

The Wolf Pack finished with 810.5 points. The defending champion Rainbow Wahine finished second with 730 points, and Northern Arizona was third with 625.

Three other UH swimmers won events in NCAA championship meet provisional times:

  • Senior Bache' Atkins captured the 100 freestyle in 50.84 seconds.

  • Senior Mia Broden won the 200 butterfly in 2:00.32.

  • Senior Claudia Barasi took the 1,650 freestyle title in 16:39.95.

    The Hawai'i 400 freestyle relay team won in an NCAA provisional time of 3:24.89.

    Hawai'i senior Megan Farrow, who won the platform diving with 230.40 points, was named the WAC Diver of the Year. Nevada head coach Mike Shrader was named swimming coach of the year, while Hawai'i's Mike Brown won his third diving coach of the year honor.

    UH MEN PLACE SECOND

    Three University of Hawai'i swimmers and a diver won events on the final day of the Conference USA Men's Invitational at Houston yesterday.

    Junior Mat Wiktorsson won the platform diving with 387 points, followed by teammate Mangus Frick with 333.70. Frick was named Diver of the Meet.

    Sophomore Greg Wilson captured the 200 butterfly in an NCAA meet provisional time of 1 minute, 47.72 seconds.

    Sophomore Nicola Xella won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:01.17.

    Freshman Mark Higley took the 100 freestyle in 44.69 seconds.

    Southern Methodist won the three-team meet with 923 points. Hawai'i finished second with 890, with East Carolina third at 731.


    BASKETBALL

    WHITING CARRIES CU

    Zack Whiting recorded his sixth triple-double of the season — 11 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists — as Chaminade beat Notre Dame de Namur, 78-48, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's game at McCabe Gym.

    Stewart Kussler added 14 points, and Marko Kolaric had 15 rebounds and 11 points for the Silverswords (14-10, 6-6 PacWest).

    Eric Bossom led the Argos (8-16, 2-12) with 12 points.

    Also in PacWest play:

    GRAND CANYON 72, HILO 64

    Richard Davis had 25 points as the Antelopes (15-7, 10-2 PacWest) beat the Vulcans (9-16, 6-7) at Hilo civic. Travis Sobers scored 19 points, and Vince Alvarado and Darryl Harris each added 14 for Hilo.

    GRAND CANYON 91, HILO 72

    Jennifer Cobb scored 18 points and the Antelopes (21-4, 14-0) opened the second half with a 14-0 run to move ahead 57-42 in beating the Vulcans (5-16, 4-9). Sheila Azevedo had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Krystlelyn Omlan added 17 points for Hilo.


    SOFTBALL

    MANUMA POWERS UH

    Valana Manuma hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, lifting Hawai'i over Mississippi State, 3-2, yesterday in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic at Las Vegas.

    Starting pitcher Kate Robinson hit an RBI double and reliever Jessica Morton worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory for the Rainbow Wahine (7-2).

    Michelle Kinney and Nakita Boyce had RBIs for the Lady Bulldogs (6-3).

    HILO WINS ROAD FINALE

    Sarah Weisskopf pitched a five-hitter and Haunani Haasenritter doubled and homered as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Western Washington, 10-3, yesterday in the Silver Bracket championship of the Schutt Division II Leadoff Classic at Phoenix.

    Chelsea Osborne added two hits and three RBIs, and Charity Senas had two RBIs for the Vulcans (10-2), who completed a 6-2 road trip.

    Haasenritter hit six of the 10 home runs Hilo recorded on the road trip.


    WATER POLO

    UH BEATS LONG BEACH

    Kelly Mason scored five goals as No. 4 Hawai'i defeated No. 12 Long Beach State, 11-9, yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's match at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

    Lisa van Raalte and Anna Sieprath each scored two goals for the Rainbow Wahine (5-3, 3-1 MPSF).

    Rachelle Denaro scored three goals for the 49ers (3-2, 0-1).
