UH women in second at WAC swim

Despite winning four of five events, the University of Hawai'i women's team relinquished its lead in the Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday at San Antonio, Texas.

Nevada (294.5) moved past Hawai'i (270) in the eight-team field. Northern Arizona is third at 218.

Bache' Atkins and Nicole Mackey each won one event and teamed with Mia Broden and Karli Rice to place first in the 200 free relay in 1 minute, 33.47 seconds.

Atkins won the 500 free in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:47.58 and Mackey won the 200 individual medley in an NCAA provisional time of 2:00.14.

Emma Friesen won the 1-meter diving with 308.45 points to edge UH teammate Megan Farrow (303.90).

Elsewhere, the UH men's team won two events, but dropped into second place yesterday in the Conference USA Invitational at Houston, Texas.

UH's Grzegorz Mroz won the 500 free in 4:23.69.

Hawai'i's 400 medley relay team of Donald Mata, Nicola Xella, Greg Wilson and Mark Higley won in 3:21.14.

Southern Methodist leads the three-team field with 309 points. UH has 288 and East Carolina 221.

CU LOSES, HILO WINS

Richard Davis scored a game-high 25 points, including a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds to play, as Grand Canyon edged Chaminade, 71-68, last night in a Pacific West Conference game at McCabe Gym.

Chaminade's Darrell Birton hit a 3-pointer with 25.4 seconds left to tie the score at 68, but his 3-point attempt as time expired bounced off the rim.

Bryan Lee added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Antelopes (16-7, 11-2).

Zack Whiting scored 19 points, Stewart Kussler had 15, and Marko Kolaric added 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Silverswords (13-10, 5-6).

HAWAI'I-HILO 71, NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 60

Vince Alvarado scored 24 points as the Vulcans (9-15, 6-6) beat the Argos (8-15, 2-11) at Hilo civic. Travis Sobers added 17 points and Sam Wilhoite 11 rebounds and six assists for Hilo. Dan Bergeson and Stephen Chang each had 11 points for Notre Dame de Namur.

HILO WINS, CU LOSES

Sheila Azevedo had 22 points and 10 rebounds as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Notre Dame de Namur, 68-62, last night in a Pacific West Conference game at Hilo civic.

Ashley Kualii added 19 points and six assists for the Vulcans (5-15, 4-7 PacWest).

Grace Hartman had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Argos (7-17, 7-6).

GRAND CANYON 94, CHAMINADE 63

Jennifer Cobb had 25 points and nine rebounds as the Antelopes (20-4, 13-0) beat the Silverswords (3-17, 3-10) at McCabe Gym. Simrin Cummins, Katherine Carlisle and Marian Murphy each had 12 points, Brittnee Fonnesbeck added 10 points and seven rebounds, and Samantha Saito added seven points and five assists for Chaminade.
