Big Isle crash victim was Austrian woman

Advertiser Staff

Big Island police have identified a woman who died Thursday from injuries suffered in a crash on Hawai'i Belt Road near the 75-mile marker as Christine Bauer, 50, of Austria.

Bauer was a passenger in a 1997 Mitsubishi Montero multipurpose vehicle that went off the roadway and overturned at 3:34 p.m. She died at 4:26 p.m. at Ka'u Hospital. Bauer was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, Traffic Enforcement investigators said.

A 48-year-old Volcano man driving the vehicle was not injured.

Traffic enforcement investigators, meanwhile, have recovered a pickup truck that may have been involved in a fatal hit-and-run that occurred on private property Saturday in Puna.

Two-year-old Abygail Arquitola of Kea'au was run over at an Orchidland subdivision home on 38th Avenue at 6:12 p.m. The girl died at Hilo Medical Center at 7:19 p.m.

Police are still investigating whether the truck was the vehicle that hit the girl.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit is asking anyone with information about the case to call Officer Andres Fojas at (808) 961-8889.

Because the girl's death occurred on private property, it is not counted toward the island's traffic fatality count, which stands at six including Bauer.
