Kaimuki knocks off No. 3 Mililani, 59-52

MILILANI — After an enigmatic regular season, Kaimuki officially re-established itself as a serious threat to repeat as O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball champion last night by holding off Mililani, 59-52, in the league quarterfinals.
The visiting Bulldogs, seeded No. 4 in the Eastern Division, improved to 9-5 in the OIA and will play West No. 3 Radford (10-4) in Wednesday's semifinals at McKinley. West champ Mililani, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, fell to 12-1 and will play Kailua (8-5) in the consolation bracket.
The OIA's top five teams will earn berths to the state tournament Feb. 20 to 23.
Kaimuki, the defending state runner-up, already secured its berth after surviving early foul trouble and a vocal crowd of about 600 on the road.
"I feel this team is bonding, and it's the right time," said Bulldogs senior post Keone Reyes, who finished with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds. "We're playing as one team, and that's how Coach (Kelly Grant) always wanted us to play."
Reyes, a 2006 Advertiser All-State first team selection, and fellow senior Beau Albrechtson, a second-team All-State forward, have been slowed by foul trouble during a regular season that did not meet Kaimuki's lofty expectations. It threatened to hurt them again last night, after Reyes picked up his second foul less than 90 seconds into the second period and Albrechtson was whistled for his third with 4:27 remaining in the half.
The score was 17-17 at the time.
"That's a factor every time we play," Reyes said of the foul trouble. "When Beau went out, I knew I had to step up and play harder."
With Albrechtson on the bench the remainder of the half, the Bulldogs still managed to enter the break down only 21-19.
"We never took advantage," Mililani coach Hiram Akina said.
Albrechtson started the second half and promptly scored all 12 of his points in the third period, after which Kaimuki took a 37-36 lead. He was issued his fourth foul less than a minute into the fourth quarter, but point guard Brandon Madamba swished back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Bulldogs up, 43-38, and Reyes soon made a free throw and layup to extend the lead to 10.
"That (Madamba's 3-pointers) was very big," Grant said. "Everybody stepped up at some point in the game — for Beau, it was in the third quarter, with Brandon it was those 3-pointers and with (shooting guard) Daniel (Colon) it was in controlling the tempo."
Reyes dominated the paint throughout the game, and his six rebounds in the fourth period helped thwart the Trojans' comeback attempt. The closest they got was 53-46 after Curtis Murakami's free throws with 1:41 left. But Reyes answered with a layup and then hit a free throw to push it back to 10 points with 1:03 remaining.
"Keone was a man in there," Akina said. "He took care of all the defensive rebounds, and we couldn't get any second shots."
Colon grabbed four rebounds and added one steal and one assist to his 12 points.
Murakami scored 11 points off the bench to lead Mililani.
