It took penalty kicks to determine the winner of two of the top soccer programs in the state.

Kamehameha outshot Mililani, 3-1, in penalty kicks last night to advance to the semifinals of the Meadow Gold Dairies/HHSAA Girls Division I Soccer State Tournament at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Warriors, the top seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, defeated the Trojans, 2-1, in an intense game that nearly matched the atmosphere of last year's state final between the teams that Kamehameha also won.

"It felt like a final, it really did," Kamehameha captain Mari Punzal said.

Kamehameha (9-0-2) plays Pearl City (13-2-2) in the semifinals tonight at 8. King Kekaulike (12-1-2), the third seed in the tournament after winning the Maui Interscholastic League, plays O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion and second-seeded Kapolei (12-2-3) in the first semifinal at 6.

Punzal, sophomore Meleana Shim and senior Kylee Ann Ah Choy all made their shots and junior goalkeeper Kanani Taaca made one save in the penalty-kick phase.

"Mililani is a good contender, so I thought it would come down to the end," Punzal said. "I was hoping it wouldn't come to (penalty kicks). It's good that we have Kanani."

Senior Stephanie Yoro was the only player to make her shot and goalkeeper Joleen Realin made one save for Mililani (12-2-3).

The teams played to a 1-1 tie through 80 minutes of regulation time and two 10-minute overtime periods.

"Both programs have a long history of quality teams," Kamehameha coach Michele Nagamine said. "Mililani came out on fire. Not having a game for a week, we were a little slow to start. I have so much respect for the way Mililani plays the game. They leave everything on the field. But with no trash talking or taunting."

Kamehameha freshman forward Courtney Botelho scored on a pass from junior midfielder Jacque Ho, who slotted a ball right in front of the goal for Botelho in the 22nd minute.

Yoro answered two minutes later on a 30-yard free kick.

A long throw-in by Punzal that reached the middle of the goal led to a shot by her teammate that bounced off the crossbar in the 56th minute. Kamehameha had two chances in front of the goal in the first overtime but both times the shots were high.

OTHER QUARTERFINALS

KING KEKAULIKE 2, KALANI 1

Senior midfielder Lexy Loney and junior forward Kailey Jean Tokunaga scored for Na Ali'i, who were outshot 28-4 by the Falcons. Junior Rosie Chinen scored for Kalani.

Loney headed in a corner kick from the right side by sophomore forward Maci-Ann Tokunaga in the 25th minute.

Tokunaga scored after sending a long shot into the far right post from just outside the 18-yard box in the 43rd minute.

Chinen scored in the 72nd minute when she put away the ball after the King Kekaulike goalkeeper tried to stop a shot by senior Alyson Suehiro, with the ball deflecting to Chinen.

Another shot by Kalani senior Marcy Fujimoto hit the left goalpost before goalkeeper Melanie Dickson scooped up the ball with seven minutes to play.

PEARL CITY 3, KONAWAENA 0

Meghan Fuller, Tami Hashimoto and Amy Tanaka each scored to lift the Chargers past the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion and No. 4 seed Wildcats.

Fuller scored in the 18th minute, Hashimoto in the 46th and Tanaka in the 49th.

KAPOLEI 1, KAISER 0

Liana Gualadarama scored off a corner kick from the right side by Kristina Behrens in the 44th minute as the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion and second-seeded Hurricanes advanced to the semifinals.Consolation

Malia Miles scored in the 11th minute for the Waveriders.

KAMEHAMEHA-MAUI 2, MOANALUA 1

The Warriors defeated Moanalua, 6-5, in penalty kicks. Kamehameha's Alyssa Souza and Moanalua's Vanessa Butin scored in regulation.

DIVISION II TOURNAMENT

It will be an all-O'ahu Division II semifinal round as Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and second-seeded Pac-Five (4-5-2) plays OIA champ and third-seeded Campbell (11-1-2) today at 4 p.m. in the stadium.

Roosevelt (13-1-1) and Mid-Pacific (5-7-1) — both winners over seeded teams — play in the other semifinal at 2.

QUARTERFINALS

ROOSEVELT 1, HAWAI'I PREP 0

Roosevelt sophomore midfielder Cemone Kalau scored in the 38th minute to lift the Rough Riders past top-seeded Hawai'i Prep, the BIIF champion.

MID-PACIFIC 3, KAPA'A 2 (OT)

Sophomore midfielder Kayla Gomes scored five minutes into the first overtime period as Mid-Pacific beat Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion and fourth-seeded Kapa'a. Miya Quinn scored twice in regulation for the Owls, and Jocelyn Enrique scored twice for the Warriors.

PAC-FIVE 2, CHRISTIAN LIBERTY 0

Joanna Lawlor scored in the 18th minute and Ashley Medcalf in the 37th for the Wolf Pack.

CAMPBELL 1, ST. ANTHONY 0

Natalie Kinney scored in the 50th minute for the Sabers.

CONSOLATION

WAIALUA 4, KOHALA 1

Jessica Temblor and Ashley Carillo scored two goals each for the Bulldogs. Alexa Holshue scored for the Cowgirls.

HONOKA'A 7, NANAKULI 4

The Dragons scored all seven goals in the first half — three by Beverly Quiamas, two by Moani Bertelmann, and one each by Megan Wilkes and Rachel Miller. Chazmyne Morgan scored three and Tazr'e Wentling one for the Golden Hawks.
