Arts fest preview at HPR studio

Advertiser Staff

A preview of the second summertime Hawaii Performing Arts Festival will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. today at Hawaii Public Radio's Atherton Performing Arts Studio, 738 Kaheka St. The program will be broadcast live on KHPR-88.1 in Honolulu, KKUA-90.7 in Wailuku and KANO-91.1 in Hilo.

Pianist Val Underwood, the festival's artistic director, will perform with artists associated with the festival faculty or musical lineup, including Jennifer McGregor, soprano; Kimaree Gilad, oboe; and Phillip Gottling, bassoon.

Admission is free but space is limited, so reservations are essential. Call 955-8821.

The Hawaii Performing Arts Festival will be staged July 11-29 at Waimea on the Big Island and is akin to the Aspen Music Festival and Tanglewood, with student musicians studying and performing with international artists.

T-SHIRT SALE BENEFITS CHARITY

That U2 Vertigo Tour in Hawai'i concert tee already wearing out?

The Hard Rock Cafe in Waikiki is selling a benefit tee, above — designed in partnership by U2 guitarist The Edge's Music Rising campaign and Hard Rock International. Crafted by award-winning designer Bill Cathcart and sported by The Edge at last year's Grammy awards and various Vertigo Tour stops, the T-shirt features the winged Music Rising logo on a black background.

Music Rising was co-founded by The Edge in 2005 in an effort to replace musical instruments lost by Gulf Coast musicians in that year's devastating hurricanes.

The limited-edition shirt is also available at other Hard Rock Cafes in Hawai'i, at Hard Rock Cafes and Hotels in the U.S., and online at www.hardrock.com. Proceeds from the T-shirt's sales benefit charity.

Shirts are available in all sizes at $30 each.
