WAIPI'O — Sophomore Beth Gallarde scored two goals as Pearl City defeated Kamehameha-Maui, 6-2, yesterday in the first round of the Meadow Gold Dairies Girls Soccer Division I State Championships at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.

Pearl City (12-2-2) plays Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion and No. 4 seed Konawaena in the first quarterfinal at 1 p.m. today in the Main Stadium. Kamehameha-Maui (10-3-2) falls into consolation play.

The Chargers struck first on a header by Gallarde in the 10th minute. Gallarde ran across the front of the goal and redirected the pass from Nestle Yamaguchi past the goalie.

"It was a good pass and she actually timed it well," Gallarde said of Yamaguchi's assist. "I just happened to be there; it could have been anybody."

The Warriors tied it in the 19th minute on a header by Kela Lau Hee off Cheynice Ruidas' corner kick.

Kaitlyn Holt's goal in the 30th minute gave Pearl City a 2-1 halftime lead it would not relinquish. On the play, the Chargers worked the ball upfield, eventually getting it to Holt down the left sideline. Holt attempted a pass ahead to Meghan Fuller, who couldn't get to the ball. Gallarde chased it down and dropped it back to Holt, who put it in with her right foot.

"I told them it was 0-0," Chargers co-head coach Frank Baumholtz said of his halftime talk. "We were clicking and connecting, but still a little bit away from where we want to be."

His team responded with four second-half goals, including Gallarde's second in the 45th minute.

"I just followed the ball," she said. "It fell out of the keeper's hands and I just kicked it in."

Lau Hee scored her second goal in the 67th minute for Kamehameha-Maui.

MILILANI 2, MOANALUA 1 (2 OT)

Chelsey Goo's shot from 30 yards out lifted the Trojans (12-1-3) over Na Menehune (8-6-3) in the second overtime period.

"I kicked it with my left foot and I guess it went over the goalie's head," Goo said.

Mililani's Chelsey Miyake scored in the 68th minute and Moanalua's Ashley Dolan tied it in the 79th minute.

Mililani meets top seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Kamehameha in tonight's 7 o'clock quarterfinal.

"If we don't play our best game this season, we're not going to stay in the game (tonight)," said Trojans' head coach Ray Akiona.

KAISER 2, HILO 0

Julia Borges scored in the 46th minute and Jin-Ru Schiller in the 58th minute as the Cougars (10-3-2) topped the Vikings (12-5). Kaiser plays No. 2 seed and OIA champion Kapolei at 3 p.m. today.
