Brown, McIntosh cruise at Pipeline

North Shore surfers Kalani Brown and Reef McIntosh were the standouts of the second round of the Monster Energy Pipeline Pro yesterday.
After a one-week hiatus due to extreme winds and stormy conditions, the competition resumed yesterday in 6- to 8-foot waves at the Banzai Pipeline.
Brown received a near-perfect score of 9.5 (out of 10) for a long barrel ride, and won the Makita Wave of the Day award.
McIntosh had the best heat of the day, receiving scores of 8.75 and 8.25 for a total of 17.0.
Other Hawai'i surfers advancing yesterday included Tory Barron, Derek Ho, Kekoa Cazimero, Rainos Hayes, Shane Valiere and Kainoa McGee.
The top-seeded surfers in the event — including defending champion Rob Machado of California, and Hawai'i surfers Jamie O'Brien, Fred Patacchia Jr. and Jamie O'Brien — received byes yesterday.

KANSAS SWEEPS UHH
Buck Afenir hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs as Kansas beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 9-2, yesterday at Simmons' Field to complete a five-game sweep.
Afenir batted 2 for 4 and John Allman and Joe Servais added two RBIs apiece for the Jayhawks (5-0).
Kansas starter Andres Esquibel (1-0) scattered eight hits and allowed two runs, one walk and struck out four in five innings. Matt Lane and Thomas Marcin each pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
David Chu batted 4 for 4 to lead the 11-hit attack for the Vulcans (0-9). Teammate Courtney Harris, making his first start at first base, had a double and triple while Dayne Ogawa added a pair of hits.

SHEPPARD SHINES
Hawai'i sophomore Emily Sheppard broke the school record in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 3/4 inches and later eclipsed that with a jump of 6 feet Saturday at the Sunrise Meet hosted by the University of Hawai'i at Cooke Field.
Sheppard's top jump would have ranked eighth nationally if the event were held in an indoor facility.
In other highlights: Freshman Amber Kaufman and senior Mallory Gilbert posted top 10 Hawai'i performances with jumps of 5-7; senior Chantelle Laan ran a lifetime best of 2:57.57 in the 1000-meter, the third fastest time in school history; and freshman Brittani Daniels threw a lifetime best of 45-11 1/4 in the weight throw, an event won by senior Novelle Murray at 55-6.

UH FINISHES FIFTH
Kelly Mason's five goals sparked No. 5 Hawai'i past No. 10 San Jose State, 13-10, yesterday in the fifth-place match of the Stanford Invitational at Palo Alto, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-3) scored five times in the first quarter and four times in the second to lead 9-3 at the half.
Hawai'i's Kristy Bagnall added three goals and Lisa van Raalte added two. Emily Cox, Angela Turnfull and Elizabeth Groh also scored one apiece.
Hawai'i earlier fell to No. 4 California, 5-2, in the final match of pool play. Mason and Bagnall scored one goal apiece.
