In a shocking display of offensive fireworks, 'Iolani scored eight runs on six hits in the first two innings against Moanalua ace Sarah Robinson Wednesday night and went on to stun Na Menehune, 10-4, in the first round of the Data House/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division I softball state tournament.

The Raiders (12-4) will face Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion and No. 4 seed Waiakea (11-1) in Thursday's 2 p.m. quarterfinals.

"We knew (Robinson) was a tough pitcher and that her 'out' pitch is the 'up' ball, so we worked hard on (watching for) that," said 'Iolani sophomore left fielder Jana Tokuhama, who went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, including a three-run, inside-the-park home run in the second inning that made it 8-0. "We tried to make her go inside."

The Raiders sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, with Tara Odo's run-scoring single and Raechele Takara's two-run single plating three of the four runs.

In the second inning, Odo's sacrifice fly to left field brought home Kai Masutani to make it 5-0, then Tokuhama's two-out, line drive to left got past the fielder and rolled all the way into the corner, allowing three runs to score.

"Our team has fighters, and I think we were OK even after the first four runs scored," Moanalua coach Kris Morikawa said. "But when they scored the second four runs, I think our girls were like, 'Wow.' They just ripped the ball unreal. When we moved in, they would hit it over our heads, and when we moved back, they would hit it in front of us, so what can you do?"

Na Menehune finally scored in the third inning, when Nanea Chan hit a one-out double to left and scored on sister Kawehi Chan's single to left. But 'Iolani answered in the bottom half with back-to-back, one-out doubles by Kryn Masutani and Tokuhama.

The teams traded runs in the fifth, and Moanalua scored single runs in the sixth and seventh. But Raiders starter Kelly Imada finished off a complete-game effort and was backed by a defense that committed only one error and nabbed three over-aggressive base runners.

And offensively, 'Iolani kept the pressure on, getting runners on base in every inning and notching hits in six of them.

"Our hitting has been getting better in practice, but I was pleasantly surprised tonight," Raiders coach Chris Shimabukuro said. "To get 11 hits off Sarah Robinson is amazing, and they were timely hits, big hits that came through with runners on. I thought our girls did a good job staying disciplined at the plate."

KAPOLEI 9, LAHAINALUNA 5

The hard-hitting Hurricanes (12-5) stormed to an early lead on the bleary-eyed Lunas (12-3) and then held on

Kapolei advanced to Thursday's feature quarterfinal against O'ahu Interscholastic Association rival and No. 1 seed Mililani (13-2).

The Hurricanes, the OIA's fifth-place team, pounded out 10 hits and scored nine runs in the first four innings while starting pitcher Kishti Kamaka shut out the Lunas on one hit.

Brittany Brackenridge drove in Kapolei's first run with a single to right field in the first inning and then hit a two-run homer over the center-field fence to make it 5-0 in the third.

Tehani Ka'aihue hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Ka'ili Smith finished 4 for 4, including an RBI triple in the fourth that made it 8-0.

"I think our team always has the ability to hit the ball, but with us it's always mental," said Brackenridge, a senior left fielder. "If we believe in ourselves, it can happen; if we don't believe, it won't. Coming into this tournament, we knew we had to believe in ourselves."

For Lahainaluna, it was hard to believe the brutal journey just to get to Manoa. The Lunas had to wake up at 4 a.m. Wednesday, meet at campus an hour later, take a 50-minute bus ride to Kahului Airport and then wait over two hours before boarding the flight to Honolulu.

They came straight to UH and then ate, dressed and warmed up for the game's 2 p.m. start.

"It was rough, but we've tried all kinds of things before — coming early, coming later ...," Lahainaluna coach Earle Kukahiko said. "The bottom line is we just didn't show up to play until the fifth inning, and by then it was too late. We made too many errors and gave up too many hits, but give Kapolei credit. They hit the ball well."

The Lunas' bats finally awoke in the sixth inning, when they scored three runs sparked by Desiree Sumajit's two-run triple to right-center. Lahainaluna got two more runs in the seventh after Ekekela Watson's RBI double to left and Catrina Filikitonga's single to center.

But Kamaka was able to get a pop fly to second base to end her complete-game effort.

Hurricanes coach Tony Saffery said he's happy to get past the Lunas, whose only two losses were narrow defeats (1-0 and 3-1) to Maui Interscholastic League champion Baldwin.

"I'm glad the kids did well," Saffery said. "We told them that the training's all done; it's in their hands now."

Leinna Kalua also homered and went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and four RBIs and Bre Patton went 3 for 4, drove in a run and pitched a one-hitter for OIA runner-up Campbell, which improved to 14-2 and will play MIL champ and No. 2 seed Baldwin (14-0) in a 4 p.m. quarterfinal.

Big Island Interscholastic Federation runner-up Hilo fell to 9-4.

KAILUA 4, WAIPAHU 3

The Surfriders (12-4) overcame a 3-0 first-inning deficit and were helped by seven Marauders errors in advancing to the 6 p.m. quarterfinal against Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and No. 2 seed St. Francis (12-3).

Waipahu's Sina Nu'u led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer over the right-field fence, Andrea Felise-La'a had a run-scoring single to center field and Elsa Apo doubled and scored on a throwing error to give the Marauders (7-10) a surprising 3-0 lead.

Kailua closed to 3-2 in the third inning after Krista Dumandan reached on an error and a three-base throwing error into the right-field corner on Ashley Hopfe's sacrifice bunt resulted in two runs scoring.

The Surfriders tied it an inning later after Kayla Konohia led off with a double, advanced to third on Tiffany Pereza's sacrifice bunt and scored on Hopfe's two-out single. They took the 4-3 lead one batter later when Brittany Tokunaga singled to center and the ball got past the fielder, allowing Hopfe to score.

Kailua junior right hander Krista Dumandan pitched 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory.
