Shopping reaches a frenzied level

NEW YORK — The nation's shoppers — taking advantage of deep discounts and expanded hours — jammed stores over the last weekend before Christmas to try to grab a hard-to-find Wii or scoop up bargains on other items. But the spending surge may not be enough to offset what is shaping up to be a mediocre December for some retailers.
Based on early reports yesterday, mall operators said they were pleased with the spending spree over the weekend, but they were still counting on Christmas Eve and post-Christmas business to meet holiday sales goals in what has turned out to be a nail-biter of a season.
CAESARS PALACE DEALERS UNIONIZING
LAS VEGAS — The Transport Workers Union said yesterday it won a vote count early yesterday morning that will unionize some 565 dealers at Caesars Palace.
The union won 380 votes in favor versus 128 against in balloting that took place up until Saturday.
The victory is the second for the union on the Las Vegas Strip since organizing dealers at Wynn Las Vegas in May.
Caesars Palace president Gary Selesner said in a statement that he was "disappointed" in the outcome. Caesars is owned by Harrah's Entertainment Inc.
NEWS CORP. WILL SELL 8 FOX STATIONS
NEW YORK — News Corp. said it will sell eight of its owned-and-operated Fox network affiliated television stations to private-equity investment firm Oak Hill Capital Partners for about $1.1 billion in cash.
The media conglomerate said in a statement published on its Web site Saturday that Fox Television Stations will still have 27 owned-and-operated stations after selling WJW in Cleveland, KDVR in Denver, KTVI in St. Louis, WDAF in Kansas City, Mo., WITI in Milwaukee, KSTU in Salt Lake City, WBRC in Birmingham, Ala., and WGHP in Greensboro, N.C.
