USA Today ceasing local printing

USA Today will stop printing newspapers in Hawai'i on Dec. 28 after three years of being printed at The Honolulu Advertiser's Kapolei plant.
Starting Dec. 31, USA Today will be printed in California and air-shipped to Hawai'i. The decision to stop printing here came as USA Today reviewed ways to increase efficiencies, a spokeswoman said.
Because of the change the newspaper will be delivered to subscribers one day after its publication. It also will be sold a day later at retail sites, which will include those in tourist areas such as hotel gift shops, airports and convenience stores.
In addition, the paper's price will be increased to $1.50 on O'ahu and $2 on the Neighbor Islands.
Both USA Today and The Honolulu Advertiser are owned by Gannett Co. Inc., the largest U.S. newspaper publisher. USA Today is the nation's top-selling newspaper, while The Advertiser is the biggest-circulation daily newspaper in Hawai'i.
