Hawai'i Democrats welcomed their newest convert, Leeward state Rep. Karen Awana, yesterday as the latest example of the party's diversity.

Awana, D-44th (Honokai Hale, Nanakuli, Lualualei), signed her party card and appeared at a news conference at Democratic Party of Hawai'i headquarters. The freshman, elected last year as Republican, said she felt she could better represent her district as a member of the majority party.

"I've seen much change for the positive during my short time here at the Legislature, and I do be believe that the efforts that I do put forward will be closer in alignment with the Democratic Party," Awana said.

State House Speaker Calvin Say, D-20th (St. Louis Heights, Palolo Valley, Wilhelmina Rise), who was among several Democrats who welcomed Awana, praised her work on Hawaiian affairs, education and homeless issues.

Awana is the second state lawmaker to leave the Republican Party this year. State Sen. Mike Gabbard, D-19th (Kapolei, Makakilo, Waikele), switched parties in August.

State Rep. Kymberly Pine, R-43rd ('Ewa Beach, Iroquois Point, Pu'uloa), asked how Awana could be trusted since she did not announce her decision until after closed House Republican caucus meetings where the GOP's legislative package for the upcoming session was discussed.

"I am relieved, not upset, that she made the change," Pine said in a statement. "I am only disappointed in her character."

Some Democrats complained after Gabbard's switch that too many elected Democrats do not follow the party's platform. Annelle Amaral, the chairwoman of O'ahu Democrats, said Awana assured Democrats that she supports the party's core values.

"I will tell you quite frankly that what we pride ourselves in in the Democratic Party is our diversity," Amaral said. "It is the diversity that makes this party strong."
