MILILANI — Mari Miyashiro scored two goals to help Mililani rally to a 5-2 win over Kapolei in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West Division game last night.

The Trojans forced a tie for second in the early Red West race, with both teams now at 2-1. Pearl City leads the division at 4-0.

Both teams had to deal with muddy field conditions at Mililani's John Kauinana Stadium after showers battered the field throughout the day. The conditions were so bad, the referees called off the boys' game that was to follow.

Kapolei took a quick 2-0 lead on a pair of Liana Gualdarama goals.

Gualdarama, a junior midfielder, put away left-footed shots in the sixth and ninth minutes, both from about 25 yards out.

"We always try to set up her left foot," said Hurricanes' head coach Brian Beck. Kapolei was playing without its leading scorer, Chelsie Swann. "I told her she had to take the workload," Beck added.

Mililani was rattled, but regrouped quickly. After benefiting from a foul on a Kapolei defender in the box, the Trojans got their first scoring opportunity on a penalty kick.

Beck lamented the call, calling it "a momentum-breaker. It took us out of the game."

Miyashiro put away the penalty kick to the bottom left corner of the net in the 17th minute to cut it to 2-1.

"We were just down," said Miyashiro, a sophomore forward. "That goal brought everyone up."

Mililani head coach, Ray Akiona, agreed: "We didn't play well early on. I think we needed something to get onto the right track."

Miyashiro went back to work, firing her second goal in the 26th minute, a right-footed shot that found the bottom left corner to tie it.

"I called for the through-ball, I saw the defender coming so I cut back inside, I shot it and it slid past the goalie," she said.

Mililani failed to take the lead on a missed penalty kick in the 28th minute, but capitalized in the 33rd minute on a Jackie Suan header that bounced in front of the goalie and up into the netting. The Trojans led 3-2 at halftime.

Mililani controlled the possession for much of the second half and added a pair of goals.

Suan broke free on a run to the right side of the net, but was cut off by a Kapolei defender. She dropped a pass back to a trailing Melanie Inouye, who sent a shot past three Hurricanes and into goal to make it 4-2.

Breeanna Locquiao added the final goal in the 71st minute. Isabel Romero deflected a cross on the left side of the box and Locquiao redirected the ball past the goalie.
