While the rest of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association East starts league play this weekend, defending division, league and state Division I champion Kahuku will wrap up its non-league schedule tomorrow in Utah.

The Red Raiders (0-1), ranked second in The Advertiser Top 10, will play defending Utah 5-A champion (large schools) Bingham at 4 p.m., Hawai'i time, in Eccles Coliseum at Southern Utah University.

The Miners (2-0), ranked first in the Deseret Morning News Top 25 in Utah, carry a 16-game winning streak from last season.

Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said only 56 of the team's 93 players made the trip, including just seven offensive linemen. To qualify for the trip, returning players had to meet prescribed standards back in May, Torres said. Even some projected starters did not make the trip.

"We won't be as strong as when we get home," he said.

As in their 21-6 loss to Saint Louis two weeks ago to start the season, the Red Raiders will use all their players. Torres will look at three quarterbacks this time. Jray Galeai is expected to play a half with Siatima Tapusoa and Nalu Carvalho playing a quarter each. Carvalho didn't play against Saint Louis because of an injury.

Torres has seen tapes of Bingham's games from last season and the two it already played the last two weeks. He said the Miners have a strong running game. Running back Sam Langi has 342 yards on 37 carries with three TDs, according to statistics in The Salt Lake Tribune.

Bingham also has a pretty good kicker in Justin Sorensen, who has already committed to Brigham Young. He hit field goals of 30, 51 and 59 yards in last week's 23-20 win against Alta. The 59-yarder was one yard shy of the Utah state record.

Kahuku arrived in Utah yesterday afternoon. The team actually caught a flight to Las Vegas in the morning, worked out at UNLV and then took about a two-hour bus ride to southern Utah, Torres said.

"It's hotter here than it was in Vegas," Torres said.

Bingham is in South Jordan, where the forecast for tomorrow is 88 degrees, according to the National Weather Service Web site.

This week the OIA West returns to interleague play with Interscholastic League of Honolulu teams. Damien will play at Radford and 'Iolani will visit Wai'anae. Both games start at 7 tonight. There are no JV games. Also, Saint Louis will travel to 'Aiea tonight. The JVs start at 5, with the varsity to follow.

Saint Louis sophomore Vonn Feao is expected back in the rotation of running backs after sitting out last week because he "tweaked his neck" the previous week, coach Delbert Tengan said.

Tomorrow, Punahou will play at Leilehua, Pac-Five will visit Mililani and Campbell will travel to Kamehameha. All begin with JV games at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow.

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation opens its regular season tonight.
