Crooner Jimmy Borges, the heart and soul of local jazz, fronts the All-Star Jazz Musicians in a PBS prime-time special, "Jimmy Borges: After Dark," at 7:30 tonight on PBS Hawaii (Oceanic channel 10). The two-hour session — assembling wingding swing, ballads and classic jive — is an Island jazz greats tour de force, with guest singer Pauline Wilson, and Honolulu Symphony Pops conductor Matt Catingub, saxophonist Gabe Baltazar, pianist Betty Loo Taylor, drummer Noel Okimoto and bassist Steve Jones.

A MASTER DISCUSSES HIS WORK TONIGHT
Graphic designers get all starry-eyed when they hear the name Michael Osborne. His San Francisco MOD shop (Michael Osborne Design) has done the logo/packaging/Web design for everything from Gymboree to the Indiana Hoosiers. And he's a nice guy to boot: He started an offshoot called Joey's Corner to do design work, for free, for nonprofit groups. The influential 1980s designer and corporate branding wizard is in town to talk about his work at 7 tonight at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Architecture Building auditorium. (A reception with light pupu is at 6:30 p.m.) The lecture is part of the American Institute of Graphic Arts Honolulu chapter's Designer Dialogue Series; $5 students, $15 institute members, $25 nomembers at the door. www.aigahonolulu.org
FINAL WORD
"Paddling a surfboard every day had made my back muscles tight, and I tried yoga because, well, that's where I thought the girls were."
