BE AWARE OF PIG HUNTS

The state is in the middle of a special controlled pig hunt from sunrise to sundown Wednesdays and Sundays on the Judd trail. Hunters with dogs will likely be on the trail on these days, so you should leave your own pet at home or use other trails to avoid an encounter with a hunting dog.

Nu'uanu is one of those lush O'ahu communities that embraces a wide swath of nature even though a major urban artery — the Pali Highway — roars up its valley. But a 10-minute drive from downtown Honolulu takes you to the Judd Memorial Trail, which meanders through tall ironwood, eucalyptus and bamboo forests.

You'll have to cross Nu'uanu Stream, where the rocks can be slippery and unstable, but once you get across the stream, the .75-mile trail is an easy looping hike. A side path will take you to Jackass Ginger Pool, which features a 10-foot waterfall cascading over the rocks.

People frequently make rope swings from the trees over the waterfall, but state land-use officials strongly discourage their use. "We cut those down," said Deborah Ward, spokeswoman for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. "People have been injured when they misjudged their landing. It's dangerous."

HOW TO GET TO JUDD TRAIL

From Honolulu, drive up the Pali Highway. Turn right on Nu'unau Pali Drive and proceed until you reach a concrete bridge. Just to your right is an open area in the ironwood trees. This is the trailhead. Park along the road at the trailhead, but be advised that this is a high-theft area. Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
