Watch for "Kukahi: Keali'i Reichel Live in Concert," a high-definition DVD that will set the standard for other locally produced concert packages. "The budget was equivalent to six CDs," said producer Jim Linkner of Punahele Productions. "But it's really worth it — spectacular and done to worldwide standards with interactive menus including both selectable Hawaiian subtitles and English subtitles." Sounds like the perfect stocking stuffer. Dennis Mahaffay directed the project. Extras include a feature on the late Uncle George Holoka'i from an earlier Maui concert, and a retrospective on Reichel's distinctive career as kumu hula and concert singer. The buzz is that Reichel might be part of The Makaha Sons' Christmas concert. ...

WHEE, THE PEOPLE: The family of producer-director Steven Spielberg visited the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo, before the cast and crew of his "Indiana Jones IV" movie wrapped up production on the Big Island. Spielberg's two daughters and their friends took in the new attraction and had a good time, according to Peter Giles, the center's executive director, and the production company made a $500 donation to 'Imiloa. ...

ON STAGE: It's a busy time for Tricia Marciel, playing Babe Williams in Paliku Theatre's "Pajama Game," starting tomorrow. Thus, she's on hiatus from "Competition Is Murder," the murder mystery production directed by Elitei Tatafu Jr., at Dave & Buster's, where Katherin Dumbrow, Matthias Maas, Kurt Onipa'a, Nicole Brilhante, Dusty Behner, Scott Moura, R. Andrew Doan, Callie Doan, Lisa Konove and Dion Donahue are double-cast for the extended run through November. ...

"Pajama" director Ron Bright and his crew got a sneak peek at actor Lance Wheeler's new children's book, "Kula and the Old 'Ukulele," and accompanying CD, "Jumping Flea," which features Herb Ohta Jr. on the uke. The book is due for release in October.

Wheeler plays Sid Sorokin in the musical; you might recognize him from the AIG TV commercial, as the driver, and from a First Hawaiian Bank spot. ...

NOTABLE 'N' QUOTABLE: Nice piece in current issue of Coastal Living magazine on Jake Shimabukuro which the mag explains is pronounced she-ma-BOO-koo-row). The 'ukulele wizard says he's always reaching for "different voices with the instrument," but as for singing, he's quoted: "I'm a terrible singer. Horrible. I don't even sound good in the shower." ...
