Working hard all week? Why not jump on a plane to Kaua'i for some Release — the hottest new Friday party from promoters Flash and Matty Boy. Known for their upscale parties at the Sheraton Waikiki — in the Hanohano Room and poolside — the boys were asked by the Sheraton Kauai Resort to import some O'ahu flavor. "We're trying to introduce new talent to Kaua'i," says Matty Boy. "The response has been so positive, and the fact that it's successful makes it much sweeter," Flash says. If you're wondering what to wear, they say, "for Kaua'i it's considered upscale, for Honolulu it's considered casual; just be experimental and fashion-|forward." Besides flying in their resident DJs, a weekly percussionist and the F&M Dancers, the pair have booked national talent for every first and third Friday. This Friday: Las Vegas' DJ Graham Funke. Kuhao Zane, son of Hilo design king Sig Zane, grew up in the retail biz. Just 24, he's already in charge of the design department and marketing of Sig Zane Designs. A graphic designer, he also has his own label, Ethnic Creative, and dances with Halau O Kekuhi, led by his mother, Nalani Kanaka'ole. But he still found time to open The Cutlery in December, at 141 Mamo St. in Hilo. Showcasing local designers (such as O'ahu's Bittersweet and Maui's Chunk & Ape) and sought-after national labels (Rock & Republic jeans), the place is already downtown Hilo's headquarters of cool. Where's the store's name from? "I grew up around the corner, that's where my dad's shop started. I used to come in, it was called Kaya Cutlery," Zane says. "The owner was the grumpiest old man. He didn't like you to touch anything. I'd see people come in from other islands just for the knives he had."
