Nash banks on bonuses

University of Hawai'i men's basketball coach Bob Nash will have to nearly double the Rainbow Warriors' existing season-ticket base to qualify for a $5,000 bonus and would earn $10,000 for being named national coach of the year, according to terms of his contract.
Nash would receive the season-ticket bonus if season ticket sales reach 7,500, the lowest of the four benchmarks set by the contract. The other levels — 8,000, 8,500 and 9,000 — carry bonuses of $2,500, $2,500 and $5,000 with bonuses being cumulative. UH sold 3,941 season tickets last year, according to an athletic department spokesman.
Nash's predecessor, Riley Wallace, did not have any season-ticket or attendance clauses in his final contract though some UH coaches do.
Wallace's base salary was $250,000 when his contract expired in March. UH would not disclose Nash's base but the range is listed as $184,836 to $403,612. Athletic director Herman Frazier said Nash is being paid "north" of $200,000.
The season-ticket clause comes as the 'Bows try to regain a following after average home attendance decreased from 7,384 in the 2005-06 season to 6,435 in 2006-07.
Nash's contract, while initially a three-year deal that expires April 30, 2010, can be extended to a five-year deal upon receiving "a satisfactory performance evaluation" at the end of each of the first two years, the contract said.
Other bonus provisions in the three-year contract would reward Nash with $100,000 for winning the NCAA Championship; $30,000 for participation in each NCAA Tournament game; $5,000 for winning the Rainbow Classic; $5,000 for participation in the National Invitation Tournament; $2,500 for each victory in the NIT and $5,000 for being conference coach of the year.
