Billfish tournament catches 11 marlin

The fish started biting early and never stopped yesterday at the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in waters off Kailua, Kona.
Twenty-three minutes into day four of the five-day tournament, Team Lantana called in a hookup and 15 minutes after that, veteran angler and team captain Lynn Moorhouse tagged the day's first Pacific blue marlin — an estimated 175-pounder.
Four more marlin were tagged over the next hour, including two by Dan Holt of Wai'anae Boat Fishing Club-DH Squared — estimated at 140 and 160 pounds.
And to cap off the day, WPAC Anglers team captain Corky Reece boated a 136-pound ahi — the first ahi caught in this tournament.
That brought the day's total catch to 11 Pacific blue marlin, one ahi and one short-nosed spearfish.
Hilton Grand Vacations Fishing Club regained the lead entering today's final day of fishing. The team from Japan has 1,139 points. Pajaro Valley Game Fishing Club No. 1, Team Lantana and Wai'anae Boat Fishing Club-DH Squared each has 900 points.

KIM REACHES QUARTERS
Defending champion Kimberly Kim won both of her matches yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in Carmel, Ind.
Kim, a 15-year-old former Big Island resident now living in Arizona, defeated 22-year-old Alison Walshe of Westford, Mass., 4 and 3, in the round of 16.
"My competitor was not easier," Kim said on the tournament's Web site. "But I played better my last nine."
Kim, who became the tournament's youngest champion at 14 last year, faces 17-year-old Jennifer Song of South Korea today.
Earlier yesterday, Kim pulled off a big rally to beat 17-year-old Rikako Morita of Japan on the 20th hole in the round of 32.
On the final hole in regulation, Kim parred the par-4, 412-yard 18th, while Morita posted a bogey. Both parred the 19th hole, the par-4 first.
On the par-4, 384-yard second hole, Kim sank a 6-foot birdie putt, while Morita made par.
"That was so cool," Kim said of her birdie putt. "That was amazing. I wasn't aiming for the green. I was aiming left and pushed it."
WATABU IN 22ND PLACE
Kaua'i's Casey Watabu shot one of the day's top rounds — a 5-under 67 — to move into a tie for 22nd yesterday at the 41st Pacific Coast Amateur Championship in San Diego.
Watabu has a 54-hole total of 2-over 218.
Cameron Tringale (70) of San Juan Capistrano, Calif. and Mike Knight (67) of Calgary, Alberta, Canada share first at 210.
WATER POLO
UH PLAYERS HONORED
Three University of Hawai'i women's water polo players have been named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches' All-America team.
Two-meter Kristy Bagnall earned second-team honors, and goalie Meike De Nooy and utility Kelly Mason were selected to the third team.
Bagnall scored 22 goals and had a .423 shooting percentage in 24 starts. She was second on the squad with 38 kickouts on defense.
De Nooy, who started 22 matches in goal, averaged 11 saves per match and added 26 steals and two assists.
Mason, who started 25 matches, and led the Rainbow Wahine with 65 goals while shooting .391. She added 34 steals and seven assists.
Hawai'i finished with a 17-10 record and a No. 4 ranking in the national poll.
UNIVERSITY GAMES
SMITH HELPS AUSTRALIA
University of Hawai'i women's basketball player Tanya Smith scored two points and grabbed six rebounds to help Australia defeat China, 68-41, yesterday at the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
Smith, a senior, was a Western Athletic Conference first-team pick last season. Australia is 1-1 in pool play.
Also yesterday, the U.S. men's volleyball team defeated Germany in its opening match, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22.
Former UH libero Alfie Reft is on the U.S. team, which plays Sweden today.
Hongzhe Sun, a 2003 'Iolani School graduate, finished sixth in the A finals of the 200 backstroke yesterday in 2 minutes, 0.69 seconds. Australia's Marcus Rogan won in 1:56.66.

SAMPLE SIGNING BOOK
Former University of Hawai'i receiver Ian Sample will be signing copies of his new book, "Once a Warrior: Hawai'i Football, On the Field and Off the Record," next week.
Sample, who completed his eligibility in December, will be at Bestsellers on Bishop Street from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday and at the ESPN 1420 Tent at the Fort Street Open Market next Friday from noon to 1 p.m.
Sample will also be making appearances at Borders bookstores. On Aug. 18, he will be at Borders Pearlridge at noon and at Borders Ward from 2 p.m. He will also appear Aug. 19 at Borders Waikele from 2 p.m.

Sample has signed a professional contract with IBM of Japan's X League.
