Four to watch out for on UH football schedule

Peaches have pits, watermelons have seeds and, yes, sweet and juicy as it also appears to be, the 2007 University of Hawai'i football schedule has a few obstacles to look out for, too.

Even a schedule that ESPN.com called the second-weakest in Division I-A; that Phil Steele's 2007 College Football Magazine rated 116th out of 119 and the Idaho Statesman termed "softer than a roll of triple-ply" has a few potential pitfalls.

Before the Warriors bite into their schedule — and with training camp having already begun, the opener is less than a month away — let's begin identifying and marking the biggest hazards that loom in UH's quest to run the table.

So, grab a schedule and circle in red the junctures, listed in order of degree of difficulty, where the Warriors need to be both good and lucky to negotiate a 12-0 regular-season run to history.

1. At Nevada (Nov. 16): What's the line about real estate? Location, location, location. That's what makes this game so intriguing — and dangerous for the Warriors.

The Wolf Pack isn't the best team on UH's schedule. Maybe not even the third best. But situated where they are on the calendar, the schedule and geographically, this will be the biggest test of whether the Warriors make it through undefeated.

Providing they get this deep into the schedule with their record unbesmirched, of course.

UH draws Nevada smack dab in the middle of what should be emotionally charged games with its two biggest Western Athletic Conference adversaries, Fresno State and Boise State. This kind of schedule squeeze comes in a short week due to a Friday ESPN-mandated TV game. It also does so at elevation (5,300 feet) and at a place where UH has never won and where there could be snow flurries.

Small wonder oddsmakers at the Las Vegas Hilton have listed this as one of their "national" games of the year to bet.

2. Boise State (Nov. 23): All you need to know is that the Broncos have everybody's number in the WAC, going 39-1 against conference opponents since 2003.

Oh, and did we mention they have won the last six against UH?

This figures to be the best test of both those remarkable runs, a game nearly everybody in the WAC expects to decide the conference title and a contest ESPN serves up to a Thanksgiving weekend audience.

3. At San Jose State (Oct. 12): This is the first of three Friday night ESPN specials for UH, which means another short week.

And, you know how much former UH coach Dick Tomey would like to win this one.

With a lot less talented teams, the Spartans gave UH plenty of chills in the last two visits to San Jose in 2005 (45-38) and 2003 (13-10).

4. At Louisiana Tech (Sept. 8): Talk about your trap-door games, if UH is to be tested in the first six weeks of the season, this is where it will surely come, deep in the Pelican State in the longest conference road trip anybody in the NCAA has to make.

With a new head coach (Derek Dooley) at LaTech, a new staff and months to prepare, UH should expect the Bulldogs' best shot of the season — and everything but the kitchen sink — in this WAC-opening game. And, LaTech won't have to show much in its Sept. 1 opener against Central Arkansas.

With games to follow at California, at Fresno State, at Mississippi, Boise State and at Louisiana State, among others, this figures to be the Bulldogs' best chance for a statement-making game in 2007.

A lot of people have the Warriors in their sights this season, but these four opponents figure to take the best shots.
