POLICE BEAT
Woman, 27, found dead, shot in chest, in King Street apartment

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 27-year-old woman who was found shot in the chest yesterday morning at her King Street apartment.

The woman was found dead by her roommate about 7:45 a.m., police said.

It is unclear when the woman died, but police said they believe it was between 9:30 p.m. Friday — when she was last seen alive by her roommate — and 1 a.m. yesterday.

Police Lt. Bill Kato, of the homicide division, told reporters at the scene that there was a handgun recovered at the apartment, but it was not known if it was the weapon used in the shooting.

The woman was pronounced dead in her apartment at 8:30 a.m.

She was identified by her husband as Trina Marie Ormeno.

George Ormeno said the two, who were separated, had three children together — ages 7, 5 and 3. Ormeno said last night that police had not talked about the case with him.

He declined further comment.

Last night, police were calling the case an unattended death, and had not classified it as a homicide. They said that could change as they get more details on the case.

Neighbors said they did not hear any disturbance or gunshots late Friday or early yesterday coming from the second-floor unit at 2920 S. King St. But they pointed out the noise could have been drowned out by cars buzzing by on the nearby H-1 Freeway.

Several also said they did not know the woman or if she lived there full-time.

"I didn't hear anything. I was surprised when I heard the news," said 53-year-old Khin Nyunot, who has lived at the apartment building for two years.

Roger Wilcox, who also lives in the building, said he sometimes gets up at night when he hears loud noises so he can make sure his car is safe.

He heard nothing out of the ordinary.

Police do not suspect the woman's roommate in the death. Neighbors were told the roommate said he saw the woman on the couch early yesterday and assumed she was sleeping. It was only later in the morning when he realized the woman had been shot and called police.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Criminal Investigation Division at 529-3115.
