The Honolulu Bulls Soccer Club added another impressive feat to its resume with a championship at the prestigious Dana Cup, one of the largest youth soccer tournaments in the world.

Gabby Yates scored the lone goal in the first half as the Under-14 Bulls defeated LdB Malmo of Sweden, 1-0, in Saturday's title game in Denmark. The tournament featured nearly 900 teams from 40 countries.

"She basically snuck in and the ball was played back and she used her speed to get in and snuck it past the goalie," Bulls coach Kerry Miike said.

Yates said it was "pure determination."

"I was very excited and happy," she said. "And proud to be from Hawai'i and win such a big tournament."

Miike believes it is the first time a Hawai'i team won the tournament. The Bulls were the only American team in the finals.

"The girls were a hit," he said. "We beat teams, and then they'd come and watch the team in support."

Yates said that at first she was surprised at the lower level of competition in pool play.

"I felt the competition in Hawai'i was a little better," she said. "As we got out of pool play, the competition got better. They were more skilled."

The girls went 8-0 in the tournament, outscoring opponents 31-0.

The Bulls Under-14 boys also played in the tournament, and went 3-0 in pool play and advanced to the round of 32.

Miike said the competition relied on a more "direct, physical style of play," and the Bulls were "banged up. We were trying to just survive the games."

Yates, who will be a freshman at Kamehameha this year, said "it was very exciting just seeing the different types of soccer, and the girls. It was a good experience.

"They were very big. Compared to us Hawai'i little girls, they were huge."

The week before the tournament, the Bulls went to Germany, living with host families and absorbing the culture.

"It was a great experience for the kids to get out there and see the world," Miike said.

HOLOMUA TAKES TITLE

Maui's Maris Van der lee scored with about four minutes left in the second overtime period to lift Holomua to its third straight over-50 national title at the Veterans Cup, the U.S. Adult Soccer Association championships in Bellingham, Wash., from July 17 to 22.

"Overall, it was really, really good," said Holomua goalkeeper Donna Fouts. "We're getting older and older, and it's harder and harder to win that puppy."

With a goal by Kiki Lau in regulation, Holomua defeated Seattle's Best, 2-1, to win the title, capping a 6-0 tournament where it outscored opponents 25-1.

ODP identifies the top players in each age group across the country, beginning with district tryouts.

Players chosen to the state's pool of players then attempt to advance to regional and national pools.
