UH water polo reaches semifinals

Fourth-seeded University of Hawai'i scored five of the first six goals and charged to a 19-12 victory over fifth-seeded San Diego State yesterday in a quarterfinal of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Tournament.

The event is being played at Arizona State's Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe.

The victory should clinch the Rainbow Wahine's third consecutive NCAA Championship appearance. The eight-team tournament is made up of the five league champions nationally and three at-large teams. UH is ranked fifth nationally, behind the MPSF's Stanford, UCLA and Southern California.

Freshman Angela Turnbull scored five goals for Hawai'i (17-8) and Kristy Bagnall and Kelly Mason added four each. Goalie Meike De Nooy had eight saves. Jenna Schuster scored seven goals for the Aztecs (26-8).

Hawai'i led 7-4 at halftime. The 'Bows scored six goals each in the third and fourth periods.

The Rainbow Wahine meet top-seeded Stanford (24-1) in today's semifinals. The Cardinal beat UC Irvine 17-5 yesterday.


BASEBALL

UH-HILO FALLS ON ROAD

Matt Hibbitts hit a three-run home run and Daniel Stovall added a solo shot as New Mexico beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 12-3, yesterday in a non-conference baseball game at Albuquerque, N.M.

Hibbitts finished with four RBIs, and Stovall went 3 for 5 with two RBIs.

Stephen Smith (5-6) allowed two runs over seven innings for New Mexico (19-23).

Robby Mowers had three hits, while Michael Higa and Ryan Taiariol added two hits apiece for UH-Hilo (12-29).

HPU DROPS TWIN BILL

Dixie State College (Utah) swept Hawai'i Pacific in a non-conference baseball doubleheader, 6-2 and 13-3, yesterday at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

In the first game, Chad Povich allowed two runs over seven innings and Garrett Messerly's three-run single capped Dixie State's five-run seventh inning.

In the second game, Kyle Pratt drove in five runs in support of Cody Hansen, who allowed three runs, two earned, in seven innings for Dixie State (22-18). Danny Lee went 3 for 4 with a home run for HPU (21-26).


TENNIS

UH MEN REACH SEMIS

The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team advanced to the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Championship semifinals for the second straight year with a 4-0 quarterfinal win over Utah State yesterday in Boise, Idaho.

UH, seeded sixth, improved to 8-10, while the third-seeded Aggies dropped to 8-9.

Hawai'i's Andres Weber, Sascha Heinemann and Jeff Fitch won singles matches, while the teams of Weber and Heinemann, and Spence Mendoza and Derrick Lajola won doubles matches.

UH will now face No. 2 Fresno State, a 4-0 winner over Idaho, in today's semifinals.


TRACK AND FIELD

UH'S MURRAY IS NO. 2

University of Hawai'i discus thrower Novelle Murray moved up to second this week in Trackwire's Dandy Dozen list of the top 12 athletes in the country in their respective event. Murray, who ranked third last week, trails only Arizona State's Sarah Stevens, whom she beat out to win the title at last week's UC San Diego Triton Invitational.
