The Hawaii Sting won its second consecutive National Junior Basketball All-Net National Tournament title late last month in Southern California.

The Sting, competing in the sixth-grade girls division, finished 5-0 in the tournament and outscored its opponents by an average of 41.6 to 26.

"We went in with the same game plan as last year, full-court pressure defense knowing teams will have a size advantage," Sting coach Randy Yamura said. "We had 12 girls on this trip, and we had the luxury of substituting fresh legs when needed."

Kiki Robertson, a student at Noelani Elementary, averaged 14 points per game.

Turner Wong averaged 10 rebounds, nine points and four steals per contest.

Kori Johnson averaged 11 boards per game.

In their first pool-play game March 23, Robertson scored 24 points as the Sting beat the Castro Valley Heat, 43-34, on March 23 at UC Irvine. The following day at Mater Dei High School, the Sting beat the Encinitas Hornets, 42-18, and the Tustin Lightning, 37-20.

In the semifinals, Pua Kanekoa scored 11 points in a 42-29 victory over the Brea Ladycats at Fullerton High School on March 25.

In the final later that day, Robertson scored 13 in the Stings' 44-29 victory over the Redwood Hoosiers at Concordia University.

Nine of the 12 Sting players were part of last year's title team in the fifth-grade division.

To prepare for the tournament the Sting played in an NJB boys league in Palolo.

The team also visited Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm and Big Bear for snowboarding.
