"Journey From the Fall," the tale of a Vietnamese family's harrowing escape to America — and the father who stayed behind to fight — after the fall of Saigon, opens today at the Regal Dole Cannery theater complex.

"Journey" has won a number of accolades, including the Grand Jury Prize at the San Diego Asian Film Festival, Audience Award at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, and best feature film at the Anchorage International Film Festival. It's directed by Ham Tran.

Kevin Thomas wrote for the Los Angeles Times: "An example of sophisticated, impassioned filmmaking involving mainly people who lived through the harrowing experiences so unsparingly depicted, 'Journey From the Fall' powerfully illustrates the refugee/immigrant experience."

"Journey From the Fall," at 135 minutes, is rated R for violence, with English subtitles.
