DANCE: MAY 5-6

A celebration of art, music and dance is offered at the Queen Emma Ballet's production, "Dances at an Exhibition." This year, paintings by Degas, Monet, Renoir, Picasso and other artists of the 19th and 20th centuries come to life in dances accompanied by classical and contemporary music by Handel, Vivaldi, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Anderson and others.

FAIRS & FESTIVALS: MAY 5

It's good, clean kid fun at Saint Francis School's 7th annual Ohana Fair, when the campus is transformed with Xtreme fun rides, Lego Town and Nozawa's ponies and petting zoo. Keiki can get their faces painted, parents can browse the white-elephant booth, and everyone can try lei making. Other attractions: silent auction and food stations — the classic fair fare of malasadas, plate lunch, fried saimin, nachos, hot dogs, cotton candy and more.

STAGE: MAY 10

Shakespeare once said, "The course of true love never did run smooth" — such as in "A Midsummer Night's Dream," which follows the difficulties of love and the relationships between fantasy and reality. The Hawai'i Theatre Center and Maryknoll School have collaborated to form the Hawai'i Young Actors' Ensemble, whose production of the classic will feature Renaissance music and dance by students from schools around O'ahu.

Maybe you remember him from the days of "My So-called Life," but heartthrob Jared Leto has a new role, as frontman of the band 30 Seconds to Mars, which brings its grunge rock to Pipeline Cafe. Band members are brothers Jared (guitar and vocals) and Shannon Leto (drums), Tomo Milicevic (guitar) and Matt Wachter (bass). The group's current release, "A Beautiful Lie," has spawned chart-topping hits "From Yesterday" and "The Kill." Opening acts include Building a Better Spaceship and Explore.

Four-time Grammy Award winning trumpeter Randy Brecker will be in concert for "A New York Minute," playing alongside an all-star group of band members Tony Levin, Steve Ferrone, Joe Caro, George Whitty and Ada Rovatti. Brecker has been shaping the sound of jazz, R&B and rock for more than three decades and has graced the albums of artists ranging from Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Chaka Khan, George Benson, Frank Sinatra and Frank Zappa, to name a few.

The scorching blades and acrobatic finesse of some of the most daring and talented performers take over the Polynesian Cultural Center at the 15th Annual World Fireknife Championships, left.
