Leilehua alum earns tennis honor

Cleveland State senior Sarah Galon was named the Horizon League women's tennis Player of the Week on April 17.
Galon, a 2003 Leilehua alum, earned the honor for the third time this season after a pair of wins at No. 1 singles in victories against UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay.
She also won both No. 1 doubles matches with partner Denisa Muntean.
"Sarah had some close matches against some tough competition but found a way to win," head coach Brian Etzkin said in a release. "And she and Denisa played very well in doubles. I'm very excited about the way Sarah and the team is playing at the end of the season."

Lewis & Clark freshman Lisa Harunaga (Kamehameha '06 of Kailua) was named to the Northwest Conference first team.
Harunaga had an 11-8 record at No. 1 singles. She was 9-9 at No. 1 doubles with partner Liz Nguyen.
ACADEMICS
San Francisco tennis player Torin Ching ('Iolani '05) and golfers Moses Kahalekulu (Baldwin) and Kurt Nino (Damien '05) were three of 113 student-athletes who were honored for achieving a 3.0 GPA or higher at USF's Scholar Athlete Luncheon on Monday.Swimming
UC Irvine junior Chelsea Nagata (Maui '04) and Randall Tom (Seabury Hall '04) were named Mid-Major All-Americans by CollegeSwimming.com.
Nagata earned the honor for the third straight season. This is Tom's first honor.
SOFTBALL
Maine freshman pitcher Jessica Ghazali (University High '06 of Waimanalo) was named the America East Co-Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season.
Ghazali went 2-0 in three appearances, with a 1.05 ERA in 13 1/3 innings in a three-game sweep of Vermont over the weekend. She allowed two earned runs and 10 hits.
Ghazali is 8-2 on the season, and her eight wins lead the team.
BASEBALL
Kansas freshman left-hander Wally Marciel ('Iolani '06) allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings in an 8-1 win over Texas Tech on Sunday.
Marciel allowed eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
This season he has a 4.09 ERA with a 4-2 record in 16 appearances.
San Diego State junior shortstop Troy Hanzawa (Mid-Pacific '03) batted 7 for 18 with five runs and three RBIs in the Aztecs' four-game series sweep of Air Force over the weekend. He is batting .315 and leads the team with 42 runs.
Southern Utah freshman designated hitter Bucky Aona (Punahou '06) batted 6 for 13, although his Thunderbirds were swept in a four-game series against Oral Roberts over the weekend. He leads his team in hitting at .331.
Sacramento State junior catcher Brent Tanigawa (Moanalua '03) hit his first home run of the season in an 11-8 win against San Jose State over the weekend.
Willamette sophomore right-handed pitcher Kelsey Nakata (Mililani '05) picked up his second win of the season in relief in an 8-5 win over Corban College on April 17.
In four innings Nakata allowed one run on two hits, with one strikeout and one walk.
Azusa Pacific junior second baseman Galen Komo ('Iolani '04) is batting .330, with 31 hits, six doubles and 13 RBIs this season for the NAIA's second-ranked team.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Stanford sophomore Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05) is tied for second place in the Pacific 10 Conference Championships.
Chun shot 71-73—144 through yesterday. The tournament concludes today.
Arizona sophomore Amanda Wilson (Waiakea '05) is tied for 17th place (78-76—154).
Santa Clara freshman Jamie Nonaka (Punahou '06) was named a West Coast Conference women's golf honorable mention selection.
Nonaka tied for 10th place after shooting 78-77-83—238 at the WCC Championships April 16 and 17.
Gonzaga junior Sarah Sheffield (Kea'au '04) finished in 17th place (78-88-76—242).
Idaho State freshman Brittany Austin (Campbell '06) led her team at the Big Sky Conference Championships April 18.
Austin shot 78-79-76—233 to finish 20th.
MEN'S GOLF
Gonzaga junior golfer Reyn Tanaka (Mid-Pacific '04) finished tied for 27th place (75-77-82—234) at the West Coast Conference Championships on April 17.
MEN'S TENNIS
Linfield senior Jon Roberts (Hawai'i Prep) was named to the Northwest Conference second team.
Roberts was 10-11 at singles, mostly at the No. 3 or No. 4 position, and 13-10 in doubles this year.
COMMITMENTS
Mililani point guard Nick Kanno signed with the Holy Names (Oakland, Calif.) men's basketball program.
Pearl City setter Kathryn Ululani Markle signed with the NAIA's Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Ore., according to an Onipa'a Volleyball Academy press release.
CORRECTION
East Carolina freshman left fielder Charina Sumner is a 2006 Kamehameha graduate. The wrong information was included in last week's Homegrown Report.
