ON THE RECORD: Chums singer-actress Tia Carrere and Grammy-winning producer Daniel Ho will soon release "Hawaiiana," her first Hawaiian album. The pair met in high school; Carrere attended Sacred Hearts Academy, Ho Saint Louis School. They performed together in Brown Bags to Stardom, which Carrere won, jump-starting her career. They've been pals ever since and finally found time to collaborate on an album. The pair will be in Honolulu June 27 to July 3. ...

THAT'S HO BIZ: Folks are still remembering — fondly — the contributions Don Ho made in his 45-year career. "I join all of Hawai'i and the world in rejoicing that this wonderful spirit graced the earth and is now resting peacefully with all of the great chiefs," said singer-actress Lucie Arnaz in an e-mail. She had visited Ho's Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber show while here for the Return to Romance festival concerts. "I will never forget the things I learned from him, professionally and personally. He was truly one of a kind. He will always be Hawai'i to me." ...

Lou Robin, Los Angeles-based show presenter and former manager of singer Johnny Cash, flew in to pay his respects to the Ho 'ohana. Robin had known Ho for decades and booked Ho's shows in Indian casinos over the past few years. ...

And Pierce Carson of the Napa Register, a frequent Hawai'i visitor who will be in town for The Brothers Cazimero's annual May Day show, said that the night Ho died, April 14, a San Francisco-based halau performed a special hula show at the Napa Valley Opera House. The troupe dedicated a number about surfing to Ho and surfing legend Rell Sunn, the Queen of Makaha. FYI, Robert and Roland Cazimero intend to pay tribute to Ho, too, on Lei Day. ...

When Ho cast members staged the first " 'Ohana Ho" show without him last Thursday, a packed house gathered and heard his daughter Hoku Ho sing "I'll Remember You," and his wife Haumea Hebenstreit Ho did the hula. Hoku also sang Jim Brickman's "Valentine," breaking down midway, but managed to finish the tune. Jackie Bay (Ho's protege) held her own as singer-emcee, providing a comic moment when she and Haumea Ho did a Tahitian dance. Kimo Kahoano took the stage twice, once to do the male vocals with Taran Erickson on "Hawaiian Wedding Song," and a second time to render "The Lord's Prayer." Lynn Cook, local artist and freelance writer, had been a Ho fan since age 18, and opined, "It was a beautiful tribute and a good show. Tough night, but beautiful." ...

WHEE, THE PEOPLE: Afatia Thompson, who's already picked up a Hip-Hop Artist of the Year Hawaii Music Award, will be the featured performer at Kapolei Middle School's Spring Fling this Friday on campus. The program, starting at 4 p.m., will include other entertainment and a movie screening at 7 p.m. Admission is free; call 693-7025. ...

Visitors and residents of Maui know Janice and Tom Fairbanks, thanks to their charming Old Wailuku Inn at Ulupono, so when Keonilei Fairbanks won the Miss Aloha Hula title at this year's Merrie Monarch, everyone wondered if there was a family link. Indeed. The hula maiden is their niece.

"We were thrilled to be in Hilo to see her and support her," said Janice Fairbanks. ...

Fil Slash is off to San Francisco this week for the KUSF 30th anniversary celebration and DJ reunion. He's an alum of the college radio station and will host a show Thursday (from 9 a.m. to noon Hawai'i time), which will be streaming live on the Internet (http://kusf.org). ...

Cheryl Flaharty and her Iona Contemporary Dance Theatre also will be on the move. The company leaves tomorrow to prep for the California debut of "Electric Blue" Sunday at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. The company plans to take in a Ravi Shankar concert the night before they take the stage. ...
